    Default TWF for skellies?

    My fellow Tempest-type Rangers,

When going into battle against hordes of skeletons, do you have a weapon slot set up with 2 bludgeon-type weapons? I read plenty of threads about good setups for dual Khopeshes or dual Rapiers or dual BLADES, but I haven't seen anything about good dual-club/bludgeon setups. Just curious how some of you deal with skeletons and other bludgeon-weak enemies.

Dual warhamers (or a light mace for offhand if you are worried about to-hit). Preferably undead/greater undead bane and/or holy/pg

I agree...just get a couple of light hammers/maces of pure good. They usually do the trick.

Since you can't crit undead dual-maces are as effective as war-hammers. I go with either a pair of heavy maces or war-hammers. My main uses a +5 Holy heavy mace of righteousness and a +5 Holy/pG war-hammer. The +5 holy of righteousness is +7 to-hit and is awesome in epic.

I just like the idea of war hammers more than maces

double light maces of acid and good

though for mixed undead its a sickle of acid and good and a mace of acid and good with favored enemy undead i don't care about the damage reduction. (and i'm usually too lazy to weapons swap in the middle of fights.)

(*note: I am just level 6 ATM)

Once you hit high enough levels I would suggest making a pair of Tier II Greensteel bludgeoners. You'll only need small and medium ingredients for the upgrade so their cheap and effective on 99% of the undead in this game. The Raise Dead clickies are just icing on the cake.

+5, Increased Damage Die, Holy, Good Burst, Raise Dead 1/day

Warhammers will deal a tiny bit more damage on crits, even when resisted, because of the multiplier affecting the burst damage.

Burst effects still works, so if its a Holy Burst or similair it does matter what the crit multiplier is, but for low levels it doesn't matter much anyway.

    Wow, that was quick

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I just ran the first 3 parts of Delera's Tomb for the first time over the weekend, and discovered that yeah, some kind of Holy bludgeon weapon would have been REALLY nice to have

One little surprise I got - I was switching through everything I had to find SOMETHING that would do some damage to those Ghostly Skeletons, and discovered that my Nicked Greatsword of all things (yes, I still have it - I'm saving it for another character, but my Ranger happened to have it with him at the time) would do maybe 6-8 sonic damage to them. Obviously, that is NOT going to be my long-term solution.

I was thinking about this topic as well recently and came to the forum to see what others have done.

I have been carrying a set of +3 Ghost Touch Warhammer of summat and +3 Ghost Touch Light Mace of whatevah so that the set does double duty against both specters and skellies. Skellies and ghosts seem to spawn together often so it's worked out well for me and saves me two inventory slots for the time being.

Ideally I'm keeping my eye out for Ghost Touch Warhammers of Pure Good but that may take some time to aquire for reasonable prices. Perhaps I'll acquire more specialized sets vs ghosts and vs skellies in the future.

Most skeletons seem to go down pretty easily, are they more of a threat at higher levels?

Note that many Rangers have 1 level of Monk, meaning they should use a Holy Handwrap of Undead Bane.

While that's an option, Tempests only get their AC & offhand proc chance bonuses when dual-wielding weapons, IIRC, so whether a monk-splashed Tempest "should" use handwraps instead is subject to debate.

For any character I have 2wf with, I use Sun Flasks vs skellies and anything incorporeal. Check em out here: http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Weapon:Sun_Flask.

You can slap em on a lowbie and said lowbie can go nuts on Delera's or Catacombs or, well, pretty much any place with undead. They actually do an amazing amount of dmg. Plus they can be bought dirt cheap in the ah. Win - win.

One thing to remember -- do not put Risia frost rituals on your skeleton bashers. All skeletons are immune to cold, and worse, Frostmarrows AFAIK have cold absorption (are healed by cold). I use +4 flame burst heavy mace and +1 holy burst light hammer of pure good.
