At the end of a tough quest, I always enjoy staring at the unopened end chest for a few minutes while pinching my nipples; but that's just something weird that I shouldn't actually tell people about.

I always figured it was to give people's diplomacy time to cool down...
Actually, these might be it, in my opinion. Between traps and not wanting to deprive someone of loot, it seems like many people take a "better late than never" approach to chest-opening...
Have fun, and don't forget to gather for buffs!

Wow, here I thought that I was one of very few who notice that this happens sometimes. In fact, I'm often 'guilty' of not jumping all over a chest first. Though, that's generally for one of these reasons:
1) If I have been helped through a quest as a first timer, or simply feel that perhaps the others did more than me to earn the loot, I sort of hang out until they get to it first. I don't know about, or have any thoughts as to how opening order could possibly affect what you pull from it. I get mine eventually, and sometimes there's a bit of conversation going on after a tough run/fight, so what's the big rush after putting in all that concentration? I'm too old to kill my hands/elbows/neck/etc.. and not get any cooldown, even if only for a few minutes.
2) If I am in a group with a female toon, it's simply a matter of 'ladies first'. Yes, yes, many men play female characters, of this I am acutely aware. It doesn't mean that my male Wiz can't hold the door for the lady. Ok, he's not really a woman...just like I'm not really a WIZARD. ;o)
3) A lesson I've learned that bears repeating as many times as necessary, "don't touch ANYTHING in a quest you're unfamiliar with unless told by the leader(s)/experienced players, or you see them do it." (No, I do not re-pull levers or re-spin cranks/puzzles, I may be cautious, but not devoid of deductive reasoning) In most cases, I know that the 'end' chests are safe and all, but you just never know. That Lair of Summoning chest with the mephit cage was a learning tool in my case, for sure.
In some cases, perhaps players are simply trying to be polite. In others, perhaps there's some sort of blame to be had if you run for the prize too hastily. For me, I suppose, it's a case of still not knowing enough to run around with any real swagger. One thing I do know, is that ettiquette is taken very seriously.
I still haven't seen what's in that darn Mephit Cage chest either, but that's ok. I've immolated myself enough over that one, plenty of loot elsewhere!
WAIT!!!! There are chests in this game to get loot from? I've been picking up crate and barrel leftovers for the past 4 years no wonder everyone seems to out gear me.
I believe in mind over matter. If I don't mind, it doesn't matter.
Sarlona! Yep, back again.
If you're able to Otto's Dance the highest level player (TR Past lives count) prior to having them open the chest while under the effects of a Jewel of Fortune then it raises the loot level of the chest by 3 and gives the chest a 9% chance to proc a crit loot drop.

This is why I don't solo ... i mean I get to a chest and I don't want to be first to open it ... usually fall asleep while waiting ..... :O

Ideas to help with chest opening dilemma:
1) Wait... what's the worst that can happen?
2) Start /roll d100 in chat before chest is opened or even before quest starts. You're usually waiting for the group to be filled. Then state, "Roll for opening the chest!(s)"
3) When you see everyone standing there, ask, "Who's the pivot man?", and hope it's not you.
4) Pray for patience, then... refer to idea #1.
