While it sucks that your friend got scammed, why on earth wouldn't he mouse over the item to make sure it's really Demon Blood before hitting Accept? I always double check items before finalizing a trade, in case a mistake is made. Yes, hindsight is 20/20, and scammers are lame, but being an aware trader could have avoided this whole situation.

Yup - it's the same idea between a bloodstone and a dusk heart. Both have the same graphic.

sorry to all, my understanding was that it was a dropped account. I honestly don't think anyone who would do something like this would use an account they intended to stay on, sorry I should have been more clear in my OP.
I am only guessing here, but I think it would be trivial to set up a quick F2P account, run a single quest to get enough plat to buy a tonic and then put up a trade in the trade chat, complete the deal and delete the account. Having not signed up for a F2P I have no idea what the identity requirements are... T

I agree absolutely which is why I am posting this incident as many of us are quite trusting and can be easily taken ripped off. The example of bloodstone and dusk heart is good one, but we all know they are the same, I was quite surprised to find out that the demon's blood and mild energy tonic are the same graphic. After I heard about this I went to the bar and looked, yep exactly the same... T

That's worse...warforged only, shady trading toon, didn't mouse over the item.

I'd actually like the name of the person who got scammed (in case I need some start up money on your server)

Dunno, but isn't it possible to inspect items that are put into the trade window (select item -> press on lense icon -> get item description)?

Yes, or as others have mentioned, just move your mouse cursor over the item, and the description should pop up after a second or two. This just happened to be a case where the OP's friend let his guard down, not realizing that someone was pulling a stunt like this...

I suppose for someone who doesn't know the graphic is the same that they could just assume they are seeing Demon's Blood, and give the seller the benefit of the doubt. But unfortunately your friend learned the hard way that not all can be trusted. It's admirable that you are bringing the need to be cautious to people's attention, it just sucks that it took something like this to warrant such a post.

im always a bit more suspicious of low level charactors trading stuff like that. Sure it just might be someone on their bank toon alt, but people who pull scams like this nearly always have to use sacrificial accounts so the toon they are going to try and pull off something like this would be a low level toon. This sucks and the scammer is a right douch bag, i wouldnt hesitate to tie some weights around his neck and feet and dump him in an oceanic trench.
