In D&D spells are classified. There exist several different types of categories.
Acrane spells are divided into different schools (necromancy/transmutation/illusion/divination/evocation/enchantment/etc.).
Divine spells are divided (or have been in previous editions) into spheres (like law, chaos, sun, good, evil, animal, fire, water, plant, etc.). Access to these spells was determined by the ethos/religion the priest (cleric/druid/etc.) belongs to. Additionally divine spells are too classified with the arcane classification system (to make it easier with saving throws and stuff).
Enchantment spells are spells like sleep/charm/hold. Elves are (by tradition) resilient vs enchantments.
