Do *all* things get rolls? (spot, search)

Do things like search and spot still get a d20 roll or does the game just figure static DC against your skill?

I'm wondering how low I can let my search drop if I wanted to spend more on open lock on my multiclass rogue. Or is open lock a dump skill for the most part?

I know someone will ask what the build is so I'm following this:

I'm up to level 3 total now (1rg/2wiz) with 2 of the enhancements. I don't have access to WF so I don't need advice on how stupid I am for not rolling WF =).

Search assumes you "Take 20" which is a rule in pen and paper that lets you assume you roll a 20, but it takes 20 times longer to do it.

Spot on the other hand assumes you "Take 10", which is another rule that assumes you rolled a 10.

Hence neither have rolls.

=P ok will do, I was kinda planning on it (as the build is made by someone who obviously knows the end game better than I ever will) but I want it all! I guess with 18 lvls in wiz I just have to let some more pure rogues lockpick the toughest stuff haha (or buy that bell i saw on the ddo store).

Yes. If a trap has a DC of 18, and you have 17 search skill, you will never search out the box. Get a prayer (+1 skills) to hit 18, and you find it on the first try. Same for spot.

My point is that you can keep trying until you succeed because there is no penalty for failing, unless you count losing things like the light monk buff which will wear off or you need all of your action boosts.

True, but if you fail on a 20, there's no point in wasting any more tools.
