    Default My greasy hireling

So I needed help with an intelligence rune. So I go to my local hireling vendor and buy a level 1 wizard. Her listed spells were acid spray, shield, and I think magic missle. All I wanted the hireling to do was to open the rune door for me. So after she did that I clicked her inactive button. As fate would have it, the battle was a little close to the hireling and even though she was inactive, she decided I needed her help. So ... she casts grease which causes me to fall. Then she casts burning hands, which causes me to catch fire.

Fortunately, I escaped with a few paltry hit points and the monster I was fighting was destroyed. But, do all hirelings have spells other than those listed? I specifically wanted to avoid a wizard casting grease on me. It did look kinda cool though!

Many low level ones do. The higher the level, the more likely they are.

    You just got lucky!

The listed spells/abilities are just the ones you're given some sort of control over.

I just wish we were able to have the clerics and casters cast those spells we know they have but refuse to use (you know, FoM or restore, resists...).

What's crazy (besides nearly killing me in a large grease fire) is that by my count, this first level hireling had five spells. The three that were listed and grease and burning hands. That seems to be too many spells for a first level. I suppose I should stop complaining since I got more bang for my buck ... even though I was the recipient of a lot of the bang.

Maybe he has scrolls of grease...

From the update 5 release notes:

Grease slicks will sometimes be set ablaze by area of effect fire effects, dealing 2 to 12 damage per two caster levels fire damage to all enemies of the caster in the slick every few seconds, as well as the caster of the grease spell.

In other words, if you caught fire, fill a bug report. Unless you were angry enough at the hireling for setting you on fire for him considering you his enemy. But that's be circular reasoning.
