    Default Concentration helping lever pulling...

I have been running a lot of lower level quest on my level 20 Favored Soul.

I will be pretty much killing everything and get to a door and start to pull a lever...and bam I am hit for a whopping 1 point of damage...and it keeps me from opening the door.

Now I can cast mass heal or raise dead or anything else without quicken turned on and just get absolutely spanked...and it not break my CONCENTRATION. But pulling a lever to a door? Oh thats way too hard of a task.

I propose that we get concentration checks to pulling levers/opening doors/opening chests. Like damage taken + 10 = DC Concentration Check.

Does this sound reasonable or just stupid to you/everyone?

this continues to be a good idea. and not just for casters, if melee were inclined to put points into it, they too could benefit.

that would be nice save that at higher levels it will still be nigh impossible due to the damage output.

but i mean my monk would be able to cover 60+ damage from his check. and i suffer the same things as your fvs, albiet probably less, since i most likely have a higher ac.

My main right now is an AC tank...

I shield block with all my turtle stuff...and usually can get something like a door, lever, or chest open, but even that fails if the mobs roll a 20 or grazing hit hgiher than my DR.

Sometimes you just gotta try three or 4 times.

I always face the mobs, hit shift (for shield block), put on any and all AC stuff I can, and just keep trying.

It sorta makes sense because the more concentration you have the better you are at focusing on pulling a lever and not be interrupted. I wonder what others think though.

That would cause the silly and undesirable result of Wizards and Clerics being able to open doors easily in situations where Barbarians and Paladins have no chance.

If the developers wanted you to operate those things while being attacked (hint: they don't) then they could just let it happen easily for all characters.

Don't forget Rogues disabling traps while being ranged from some archer beyond visual/targetting range.
Some sort of check to be able to avoid interruption would be nice.

As A_D said, either the devs should let everyone open doors easily while under fire, or let noone do so.

The correct choice was to make door opening under fire hard, so as to increase the risk of running past everything. Running quests (like tangleroot part 5a and 6a) are much more interesting if one failed door opening can result in a horde of monsters coming down on you like...well... a horde of monsters.

Anyway have you ever tried unlocking your car door while someone was stabbing you in the kidneys with a small pocketknife? Or even opening a simple combination lock to your shed while 3 or 4 mosquitos are buzzing around your head looking for a good meal?

I understand where your logic is coming from...

But to be able to cast a spell while being smacked seems harder to do than pulling a lever.

In your example I would say a Cleric or Wizard would be able to stay on task better thana barb...maybe not better than a paladin. Then again with a high CON the barb would have no problem.

Maybe just increase the DC? I just threw out that number.

I also agree...I think the Devs use doors a choke point intentionally. It just seems silly to me that being hit for 1 interupts me.

Heck maybe make it a Fort Save? Make it a Will save?

Iono...I am sure it is WAI...but its just annoying lol.

they probably have higher AC/DR than a wiz/cleric...

the idea is just to give people more of a chance anyways. i mean it wouldnt change your barb/pally's chances, unless you have concentration, then it increases it, if you dont get interrupted

    From an RP standpoint-

Wouldn't the melee "stand gaurd" while the more intelligent of the group (i.e. wizzie or rogue) mess with the fancy contraptions? Like levers/runes/traps??

/signed from a pure RP view.

    But then-

Concentration is based on your constitution (and skills, but TECHNICALLY)......

So melee class would use their strength while ranged/CC stand guard.....

    /signed from a technical POV.

Long story longer, /signed because it makes sense.

I wonder why you can get interrupted at all. Ok, for a lever that has a minimum Str requirement just to be able to operate it - if you're attacked then it's supposed you try to avoid the attack, and thus loose the grip, or raise a hand to deflect a blow, whatever. But most doors/Levers can be operated at Str 1 and shouldn't require more concentration than walking!

So IMHO there shouldn't be an interrupt, unless the item being operated has a minimum requirement of any kind. If a lever or door requires minimum strength of X, then being attacked and damaged should add to the Str required, because you're distracted and cannot put all of your strength into the task at hand. If you try to operate a rune, it gets harder to focus your spiritual ability to be able to activate it if at the same time you get distracted by attacks, so again, this should add to the DC of the rune.

Makes more sense to me than tying it to a skill that wasn't intended for that kind of purpose in the first place, and definitely not for successfully performing tasks of strength while under stress. For runes, concentration makes some sense. But not for levers and doors.

Sorry, but that just makes sense. You need to be more realistic and suggest something more along the lines of what Turbine would really accept. Maybe concentration should be applied to melee attacks. That would be awesome! Turbine could really sink their teeth into reducing DPS by making melees roll to see if they concentrate on hitting a monster.

Either that or apply it as a save vs lag. You roll to see if you ignore lag! 22 (13 + 9) Lag failure! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHH!!! Or even better! Make it interactive!! If you fail your concentration check, made every time you get hit, your entire screen goes blank to emulate your character not being able to focus on the task at hand (ie: walking, breathing, standing still). You get the idea. This is something Turbine would really go for!

It would be something else our high-AC tanks can try using.

They'll zerg, never get hit, pull levers, ect.

How about something to make using an item have a CHANCE to make you uninvisible too? Instead of always.
