Question Pure WF Pally: Concentration or UMD?

So I'm working up a WF pure pally, and sadly only get 1 skill point per lev. I worry that I won't have enough Concentration to cast my spells in battle (though with low Dex I'm also worried about getting tripped often). Is maxed Conc worth it/necessary? Is maxed UMD worth it/necessary for a WF? Please weigh in.

    Thanks in advance!

You dont need to cast in melee with a wf pure pally, the only spells you will be casting are buffs, they are not critical in the sense that failing them will not cost you much, in any case if you need to recast them during a fight you step out of the fight cast and get back to beating the boss... So, umd is better than concentration... if you can use a +2 int tome at lvl 7 to get some points in balance or jump, would be nice aswell...

Good Advise. UMD. Forget Concentration. Get a +2 INT Tome before L7. then add some Jump & Balance.

I've heard 10 points in jump is sufficient. Is there an actual formula to follow?

The idea is that Jump spell can give you up to +30 jump if cast on you by a party caster. The hard cap on the skill is 40.

If you get to 30 STR, then you don't need any ranks in Jump since the spell will cap you out on that skill.*

*: If you wear armour that does not give you a penalty to Jump, that is.

Aha, did not realize there was a hard cap on jump. What about Balance? How does that work versus Trip/Imp Trip?

Unlike Jump, balance is an opposed check (opposed by the DC generated by the trip attempt) so I doubt it has a hard cap. I have not done any testing myself to determine what the soft cap (if any) might be. Trip/Improved trip mechanics are here if you are curious.

One skill point per level eh? Eat a +2 INT tome at 7 if ya can. Umd is handy as it is relatively easy to get 39 UMD at level 20 on a pure pali that didn't dump CHA. Even without extend, you still probably won't be casting spells mid-combat at end game...but concentration does help with reconstruct scroll usage. Personally I'd rate concentration above balance (and definitely above jump), so hopefully you can get 2 skill points per level and invest in both umd and conc.
