Default Top 10 Orcs who are Not Orcs!

Ever notice that some characters in other genera are very orc-like?

    1. The Hulk with his "Hulk-Speak" and green skin makes him a perfect canidate for being a sort of God of the Greenskins.

    2. The Klingon warriors which seem to be Space Viking/Samurai dudes are very orc-like with their gutteral tongue (Was Michael Okuna a Tolkein linguist fan?) and the belicose ways.

    3. The Gamorrean Guards: Lucas' answer to orc. These green-skin porcine characters look like the AD&D version of our beloved monsters.

    4. She-Hulk: She is hot & green. 'Nuff said.

    5. WWII Monsters from An American Werewolf in London: These fascists with machine-guns look very much like Orcs in the 20th cent.

6.The Muppets Pigs in Space which spawned an entire game of Space Orks.

    7. Skaar: Conan meets the Hulk! I love this character. He definitly looks like he could be a green-skin orc with his fur loincloth and oversized weapons ala WoW!

    8. The Wicked Witches guards with their grey-blue skin and polearms. Perhaps they are more hobgoblin like?

...the eyes of a ghastly white vampire stare back at you...his fangs gleam in the light from your torches and lanterns...In your heart, you know that most who have seen this face never lived to see another

Yeap, Star Trek is just LOTR and D&D in space.

    Of course you have Humans.

    Klingons are space orcs.

    Vulcans are space elves.

Romulans are space drow. /rage quit vulcan society. Left and formulated their own society. Evil, deceptive etc.

Ferengi are space Halflings, or possibly space Kender.

    Cardassians are space lizardmen.

    Ah details, details.

Fortunatly for fantasy and role-playing games much of it is up to one's interpretation.

There is a link on 2 of the other orc threads from TV tropes: Our orcs are different I think its called.

You can learb alot from Marvel & the Star Trek francise for alternate universes and how canon can be disregarded for the sake of a story-line.

So perhaps Tolkein's orcs were not Green-Ham orcs.

Yes DDO incorporates the Grey Orcs of 3.0, but perhaps those are the Grey Orcs of the Hills. Perhaps there are the White Orcs of the Northern Mountains, the Blue Orcs of the Western Sea, or the Brown Orcs of the Desert, or the Green Orcs of the Southern Jungles, or the Purple orcs of the guild...anyway you get the point.

Its fantasy. There are no rules just "cultural game traditions".

Just like real-life culture, game/fantasy cultures vary from person to person.

Star Trek: The next generation had some orc-like aliens with muskets in the episode "Hide and Q", where Riker is given Q's powers. Tried to find a picture, but couldn't unfortunately.

While any AD&D player saw in RotJ these and thought "orcs!", these were the "orcs as drawn at the time" and not what they looked like in the monster manual. Supposedly there was a particularly good orcs as pigs drawing used in a calender and all orcs were had to look like that until well into the 1990s.

Perhaps I misunderstood you when you said "and not what they looked like in the monster manual." but here is the pic in the monster manual.

The infamous Hildebrant Brothers' picture which depicst one orc with porcine featrures does predate the monster manual and may be influenced by Tolkein's books when twice a Uruk calls one of the "lesser breeds" a "swine".

Perhaps Tolkein himself was influenced by the sea-monster of the 16th century Orlando Fuiroso?

    XXIX
"While, with much solace, seated in a round,
We from the chace expect our lord's return,
Approaching us along the shore, astound,
The orc, that fearful monster, we discern.
God grant, fair sir, he never may confound
Your eyesight with his semblance foul and stern!
Better it is of him by fame to hear,
Than to behold him by approaching near.

    XXX
"To calculate the griesly monster's height,
    (So measureless is he) exceeds all skill;
Of fungus-hue, in place of orbs of sight,
Their sockets two small bones like berries fill.
Towards us, as I say, he speeds outright
Along the shore, and seems a moving hill.
Tusks jutting out like savage swine he shows,
A breast with drivel foul, and pointed nose.

    XXXI
"Running, the monster comes, and bears his snout
In guise of brach, who enters on the trail.
We who behold him fly (a helpless rout),
Wherever terror drives, with visage pale.
'Tis little comfort, that he is without
Eye-sight, who winds his plunder in the gale,
Better than aught possest of scent and sight:
And wing and plume were needed for our flight.
