    Default Deathknight build?

I'm currently having fun playing with my drow wizard whom I've gotten up to level 7 now, and am aiming at continue with the Palemaster PrE. I'm using tihocans guide and there's nothing to complain about - except him being very, very squishy. This isn't really a fault of the build, but probably just my own fault because of my playstyle (I like being in the action, and know that's not really what wizard is about). But it did give me an idea of a possible multiclass that might be neat.

I'm thinking some sort of fighter/wizard combo where the wizard spells are merely for self-buffing purposes while you enough levels of wizard to be able to transform into an undead. But I'm pretty **** at theory and builds, and don't know if this is even viable, so what do you guys think?

Is it possible to create this thematic build, and have it being decent at worst?

It would be hard if you hadn't planned it from the start.

    I imagine a warforged 18 wizard / 2 rogue
evasion, trap skills, UMD, and use Master's Touch for Greataxe proficiency.... unsure how effective it would be though

12 wizard gets you the forms; there are plenty of 12/6/2 builds out there if you want more melee. Evasion 2 / Melee 6 / Wizard 12 is one model ... Phidius has lots of builds in his sig of mages like this (not necessary pale masters).

More Pale-Master Centric might be ...

Monk 2 / Fighter 6 / Wizard 12 using wraps w/ the lich form additional damage to unarmed, Kensai I or maybe whirling steel.
Monk 6 / Fighter or Ranger 2 / Wizard 12 using whirling steel or ninja spy 1 (combined w/ wraith form could be fun)

    And of course ...

Wizard 20 using Master's Touch and/or hold/stun spells w/ dual heavy picks or, if you're a fan, greataxes. Or toss in a level of a melee class or two.

Pity Bladesworn Transformation kinda steps all over the undead forms 'cause that would be kinda nifty if you could Bladesworn + Death Aura + Wraith Form reliably (Rog 2 / Pal 6 / Wiz 12)

Bladesworn plus wraith form sounds ace, but I like the monk/fighter/wizard combos you've outlined above as well. Would kinda want to go with a longsword or greatsword though for the theme, which would unbalance(?) the monk wouldn't it?

Not with whirling steel strike for Longswords. Monk 2 / Fighter 6 or Ranger 6 / Wizard 12 for that one. If you were a fleshie I'd definitely do Ranger for the healing capability w/ wands, etc.

Drow could also be passable with Monk 6 for Ninja Spy 1 and use shortswords. That would be Monk 6 / Fighter or Ranger 2 / Wizard 12. Probably Ranger as well - you lose a feat but can't underestimate the usefulness of whipping a wand. The level progression here would be kinda painful.

Both would be late bloomers. Ninja Spy 1 + Pale Master 2 takes 18 levels; you'd need to decide what you wanted first.

I think this is very possible - Phidius and some others have created some nice caster/melee hybrids

Here is one of Phid's builds: 12 wiz/6 ranger/2 rogue:
    http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=214937

Now, if you wanted to keep the pale master prestige class you would start to hurt on feats on this particular build. You could take 2 lvls of monk instead of rogue to make up for it, or you can not take the tempest feats (dodge/mobility/SA) - 6 levels of ranger is still a good splash as it gives you 2 favored enemies, bulls stength and TWF and ITWF for free. Tempest I used to give a 10% alacrity bonus, but now only gives 10% off-hand proc increase.

Phid, oddlived, and a few others know how to make these builds work. It's not for the faint of heart, if you ask me.
