DDO making my screen go black, seemingly at random

OK...DDO has been working fine, until I got a new computer, downloaded all the latest drivers, and started having seemingly random occasions where DDO seems to be literally turning my graphics card OFF.

Literally, the screen will go black, and my monitor will lose all video signal, and I have no other way to get video back without rebooting my comupter with the power button. Here is the current DXDIAG:

Just to illustrate the problem: I watched DVDs and browsed the internet all morning today with no problems...logged into DDO, and it happened THREE TIMES in one hour. The DVD watching at least used the graphics card, so I'm wondering if there's some sort of issue where DDO calls some routine that somehow accidentally glitches this particular card.

(Also played "City of Heroes" for 3 hours today as well with no graphics card issues)

More information: When this occurs, DDO apparently locks up because, though I can still hear the background music playing, the ASDW keys don't result in any "footstep" noises, and clicking my mouse doesn't result in the telltale sound of my character swinging their weapon.

So no one else has encountered this problem or has any idea what's actually happening?

I am having the same problem only mine is much sooner in the game.

I haven't got past the Character Creation section yet.
Each time I load the game I get a bit further into the CC.
But now, I can't get past 'Name Character'

I have turned all my settings to absolute minimum to get to this point and the game just switches my Graphics Card off

My PC may be Old, but it can still run most modern day games (like LoTRO) on Ultra-High settings

This happened to me last night also. I have seen this problem before so i downloaded speedfan and noticed that playing this game overheats my computer after a couple hours. My gcard was at 58c / cpu at 64c/ overall temperature was 66c which is super fking hot. I can play alot newer games like battlefield2bc without any overheating after like 10 hours of gaming but this game melts my comp. I dont get it.

With that said, your issue is that the computer is overheating and probably damaging your gcard. When a gcard burns it shutsoff the screen into a black screen and/or loses signal

I had at first though that might be the problem, however, I installed a 6" fan blowing directly over the graphics card's heatsink (my computer's box entire side panel is a vent, so I could put the fan directly in front of the graphics card), and it still happens, sometimes only after half an hour or so...

OK...after getting Speedfan installed (though apparently even the beta version cannot correctly read the fan speeds on this new computer, though the temperature readings seem to be working) - for some bizzarre reason, even though this very same graphics card was having no problem at all with this very same program in my old computer, the temperature is going WAY up in this new one, well beyond what it should.

Is there something odd about the software that causes some sort of graphics card feedback? because the temperatures I'm reading, even with the extra fan blowing right on the graphics card, should be impossible (I even showed the computer to a Geek Squad guy down at Best Buy, and he said with that fan there, it should be impossible for the GPU temperature to go up beyond about 80, and it's rocketting up to above 90 almost instantly when the program starts up (and that's with all atmospherics and water effects disabled.

Go into your "Documents" > "Dungeons and Dragons Online" and find the 'userpreferences.ini' file.

In there try these settings (change yours to match) under the appropriate section (indicated by the word in [Brackets] items in grey text between (Parenthesis) are my comments and do not need to be added to your file )

Resolution=1440x900 (based this off of the resolution listed in your dxdiag)
RefreshRate=60hz (again based this off info listed in your dxdiag)

[Troubleshoot]
EngineSpeed=Low
MaximumFrameRate=57 (gives the graphics card a 3 frame "buffer" with synctorefresh on)

Save and exit out of the userpreferences.ini file after making those edits and relaunch to test.

computer works fine for every other application. it played DDO fine for 3 years. Then couple days ago a random black screen in the middle of the game. now for the last 24 hours i get 7-30 seconds of game time after my character loads. I can move, see guild chat, and social pannels. Then black screen again and i have to restart my machine. Like the OP it seems as though something is just turning off my video card. Please help this is really frustrating

Having the exact same problem. Log in just fine, can play the game normally for 5-20 mins and then game seemingly crashes into a black screen, and I have to restart my computer via power button.

Does not occur with any other game, even more graphically demanding ones.

I have the same problem. Tried reducing all settings. I have an ATI Radeon HD 4850. No problems with any other applications.

This is obviously not a coincidence.

How do we get tech support involved? How can we find out if this has been bought to their attention and if they are looking into it? Is it possible to remove the recent update? Everything ran fine prior to this.
