Noob Monk question

I know... this is really a noob question but I would love to get your thoughts on this. I'm new to DDO and started a 28 pt Monk. He's only level 2 (rank 8) so I haven't gotten very far into the game. I've just reached Stormreach.

In the forums it really seems like the general consensus is that monks should use a 32 pt build (which I haven't purchased). Should I scrap my current monk and start a 32 pt character? Is the 28 pt character viable?

Honestly... it seems like this is a question that would apply to every character class and build really... not just monks.

All classes benefit greatly from a 32 point build but some more than others. Paladins and monks really don't shine unless 32s are used. Fighters, barbs and many others are just fine with 28 pts. I would restart your monk at this point if you can. After all, 2nd level doesn't take very long to get back up to.

Well before you scrap your build, how did you make him/her? monks can be played at 28, without out tomes, just based off of your level ups. so what was your race, starting stats and feat choices?

I agree that a monk benefits greatly from a 32 pt build. But, I had no problem getting my first toon to level 20 without it.

If you have the cash/turbine points, then starting over with a 32pt build is certainly an option.

I'd recommend though that you play it for a while. You will gather favor, open up back pack and bank slots, earn , and possibly earn the 32 pt build while you learn to play the monk. Then, if you decide you like the monk, either level this one up to level 20 and plan for a quick true reincarnation, or turn this toon into a mule to hold your excess equipment, and start a new one.

I had no problem leveling my first monk toon to level 20 without the 32pt build. It was not a very viable end game build, so I TR'ed into a 34 pt build and started over, this time with a lot better understanding of how to build a monk for my play style.

There are some things I'd certainly hold off on buying with TP's since you can earn them in-game. 32-point builds would not be one of those. I have a character that I've played all the way to level 20, did whatever seemed like fun at the time and I could find a group to do. I've been at level 20 for about 6 weeks now. I'm STILL not to 1750 favor. I'll only get to 1750 before my TR by intentionally grinding favor - something which I view as much less enjoyable than just playing what you feel like playing.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't go for 1750 on a 28-point build. Just that 1750 isn't necessarily going to happen unless you specifically tailor your game play toward that goal while level 20 will happen just by playing whatever sounds like fun at the time. Also, buying 32-point builds with TP's open them for all servers versus the 1750 favor which is for one server only.

My monk is a 28pter and I do very well so far up to 13. 32pt builds give you the difference of about +1 to DC/Attack/Damage based on where the stats are put..it's nothing major in any sense, but it's definitely nice if you can do it.

I say play for a while with your 28 pointer and have fun.

keep an eye out for the 32point builds to go on sale then buy it.
Then you can transfer all of your knowledge and some of your tasty handwraps/gear to your new 32 pointer to make leveling easier.
