    Default Install Problem

My wife has a new laptop and we have been trying to install DDO on it.

Downloaded the client and started it up, it began doing it's thing.

It downloaded some updates, and then said client need to restart (so I restarted it) and then gave me an error message, something about Gamelauncher.exe is in use by another program. Every time I tried restarting the client, the same error message would appear.

Now, I am pretty certain nothing else on the computer is using that program but just in case, I restarted the entire computer.

Now, when I start the DDO client, it says it's downloading "splash screen 1 (through 10)"... After that, it goes to the normal screen with the 'Connect , Examine Programs, Update Programs, Examine Game Data, Update Game Data, Disconnect,' except that nothing happens. Under the 'Status' column, there is nothing but black.

What I am wondering is, is this just a visual bug and it's actually downloading and I cannot see it? Or is this some sort of technical issue that may be familiar to someone out there that can help?

Also, when I try to close out the client using the 'X' at the top right corner, nothing happens. It acts as if there is nothing there. I control/alt/delete to open the task manager, and it tells me under the applications tab that DDO is running. This is the only way I can shut down the client.

By the way we have Windows 7 Home Premium as the OS installed in case you were wondering.

    Any help would be appreciated.

There's a couple possibles with this one, some antivirus tools on Vista/7 are more aggresive with security so they don't let the launcher rename/modify or download/delete files. (case of "good behavior" by the AV just bad timing). You might want to try temporarily turning off your A/V programs "active scanner" while the game is updating.

Another one is some internet security apps that have "web filtering" and "banner ad blocking" options see the launcher trying to download "jpg" files some with "ad" in the name and stops them since it (The launcher) is trying to do it via a standard web protocol (ie. via http).

You may have to find out if your security suite blocks banner ads or filters web connections and see if that can be turned off (also just temporarily) as well.

Aside from those it might be in some rare instances UAC on Vista/Win7 preventing it and you might want to try temporarily turning that off as well:

If it keeps up after all that definintely follow up with a tech support request if you haven't yet.
