Wi-fi cannot connect

I'm using a laptop while on vacation. At home, from the same laptop, I was able to log in yesterday and update the game.
All day today, I can start the client and choose a world, but before character selection it will hang and when I stop the connection it gives an error: connection failed: You do not have the current version of the client installed.
When I launch the Turbine Download Manager, it does not make a connection to the download server.

I did a thorough search and found some people had a similar problem last year. I uninstalled the Download Manager, and the game updated itself.
