    Default Turbine MMO console news

Massively.com and Giantbomb.com are reporting today that Twisted Pixel worked on Turbine's upcoming console MMO. From the Twisted Pixel blog today:

Also, interesting note from Giant Bomb that apparently Microsoft's unwillingness to allow F2P MMOs on its console left Lotro development in stasis: http://bit.ly/cysQBV

Interesting! 'Splosion Man was supposed to be a good game, and Twisted Pixel is a well-known XBox Live development house. Makes it likely that whatever is coming will be coming for Xbox, maybe.

Microsoft has some pretty hefty requirements which appear mostly as ultimatums. I think there's no question of the 360 being able to run DDO and it comes down to the business side of it. Some of the other mmo developers that had games slated for the 360eventually pulled their products and at least Cryptic came out and pointed a finger at MS as for the reason.

I don't know if it's fact but I recall something something about MS requiring 3/5ths of revenue on products they distriubute through xbox live. Now that I think about it, I believe it was about the indie products being sold through xbox live arcade. Seems pretty high.

If Turbine/WB get MS to bend over backwards and allow DDO without a subscritpion and keep it strictly transaction based I could imagine there'd be less opposition as long as the point system used to purchase content was MS's points used for Live.

edit: just read the link, thanks Jerry! So MS actually opposes a non-subscription based model built around micro transactions - I wish the details of said negotiations were public 'cs they'd be an interesting read.

Posted this morning on the F2P forums by mistake, glad i wasn't the one called out for posting old news =p

    but hadn't seen that quote:

"While that's the best of a few sad examples, there is still Lord of the Rings Online for Xbox 360, a purported version of the game that Turbine has never announced. As the rumor goes, Lord of the Rings Online Xbox 360 was finished in 2009, but Microsoft brass wouldn't let Turbine use a free-to-play model. It's been stuck ever since, even though the PC version of the game will go free-to-play in the near future."

Thanks Mock this really gives us hope for Console Lotro and DDO

The strangest thing is that Even if Xbox Live can't have free games, it doesn't stop LotrO from being accessible on the Xbox 360 restricted to VIPs (or simply with a charged 30day offering which is what buying the box pretty much does)

Not only that, when Turbine 1st spoke about making a console MMO, they said they were using the PS3 as the main development platform.

My guess is... massively must have heard something and then taken it completely out of context.

Sooo, the good news is, the secret console MMO might be Lotro (and DDO might soon follow)
except it doesn't make sense that they would need help from an indie developer to make that happen

so the bad news is, they might have worked on a console port for Lotro at some point then stopped for whatever reason

which would mean that the secret MMO (that Twisted Pixel helped with) is indeed Harry Potter Online or... Looney Toons Online or something similar

i think i'll stick with being a pessimist, it prevents me from being disappointed.

Well, I wish MS would let them just release F2P games, but I have a PS3 so if they resort to Sony it wont be a big difference to me. I would just much prefer to play on 360 than PS3. If I'm stuck playing something on a consoel, I'd MUCH prefer not to have to use the PS3 controller. That thing is dated.

Well there might be third party controllers compatible with the PS3 that are more to your liking... like this

That would definitely make a big difference. I don't know why I don't have one of those yet. Or at leasta converter to use one of my 360 controllers for PS3.

The only other issue I'd have, is I've ran into a lot of issues on PSN, with it going down for maintenance without warning.

It seems odd to me that Twisted Pixel would be hired to develop a game for the PS3. They've been an XBox Live exclusive until now, as far as I know. But that's right - Mr. Paiz did strongly indicate recently that they'd be thinking PS3, didn't he?

    Arrow Platform MMO? Hope Not.

I far prefer gaming on PC than on platform, though we have three platforms here at home including XBox. My preference for gaming would be PC, and then Playstation. At least we've never had to replace a Playstation, and I can't say the same for our XBox.

Going the PC route would prevent platform companies like Microsoft from pinching large quantities of the MMO's income. I like when player subscriptions go towards game development, rather than to greedy platform companies. Still, I prefer Playstation to XBox. Final Fantasy Rules!

Well, it would be odd that they are asking for programmers with experience coding for PS3 in job listings, if they were only planning on releasing on Xbox

Personally, I will never own a console. It's cheaper to upgrade a PC than it is to replace a console, and I can actually do real world things with a PC, like write my own software.

    Cheaper?

200 bucks and you got a console that can play it
    how much is a PC?

but then again, playing on PC is quite easier indeed

nevertheless, theres 160 million console owners out there (assuming a Wii version)
    quite a number

half that if no Wii, and its still pretty good

One that will play Crysis nicely, about 350-450 USD.

What did the ps3 cost when it first launched?

    *shudder*

the move to console was what killed Mechwarrior.

Not only did MS abandon the PC platform, they refused to release the source code so player-devs like Mektek could fix/upgrade the game.
