While Tempest have lost a lot of DPS since it came out - partly due to severe nerfs, and partly due to other melee classes getting powerful PrEs of their own - rangers and Tempest still have lots of pros. They are still quick vorpalers, they can get a nice AC, they multi-class very well (and deeper now after the Tempest III nerfs), as rangers their spell list is great, and they are in general very self-sufficient. Everything is not about DPS.

STR based Tempest Ranger had their DPS lowered, but if you have Tempest III, it is still very very high. The Tempest Rangers that got nerfed hard are all those Tempest I splashes. Tempest is no longer the best by far, but it is still very high on the DPS list (if you're Tempest III). My pure STR based Tempest III ranger still does massive damage. I routinely get agro from everyone else.

The discussion about fighter vs rangers has been adressed too many times. IMHO the problem is too many people rely on the numbers and opinions some people post in the forums and forget to factor in their own ideas/playstyle. Fighter has a higher dmg potential than ranger for many reasons. Is ranger a good dps char? IMHO yes, one of the top when fighting Fes, many people argue that fes is only 4/5 creature types but those are the same that factor in fighters using speed boosts versus bosses (which is way less a % of this game than a good ranger fighting fEs).

Every char has its potential and all comes down to playstyle no matter what numbers some people pull out of their heads because dps is very very relative in this game and ALWAYS depends on way too many factors to be an accurate issue.

The way I see it in very brief lines fighter is a good char for min/max people who like to party all the time, especially in epics. Ranger is much better for everything else.

    Just my 2 cents.

I was not ever arguing that fact.

And I said Ranger "could" not Ranger "should".

That said - getting DEX to 13 is a puny investment compared to getting 17, and I dont know any pure non-halfling Ranger worth anything that started with anything less than 16 str.

Hence why "minimal" STR just sounds plain silly to me.

And another thing: How often are you "not" fighting one of your 5 favored enemies?

It depends on what your "end game" is. If you're mostly doing raids you can fit almost everything in. if you're doing epic, you can't. Who the heck takes dragon?
