    Exclamation New Rogues.

Look. I like you. I really do. That is why I am taking this time to explain something to you.

Contrary to the way it sounds, you do NOT actually have to be sneaking to get your sneak attack bonus. You just have to not have aggro.

Thanks for your time. Now please get out of sneak and do some damage for a change.

    Hugs and Kisses,

    Schmitty

sad truth is, I didn't know this fact for a looong time.

However, once explained to me ONCE, I was like, sweet - I don't like sneaking anyway

I heard the only way to get sneak attack damage was if you came in from above them. you know, like jumping at them from behind off a big rock. I haven't tested it yet, but I'm going to assume that's 100% true.

also, only rogues can roll on tharnes goggles.

and another thing: always attack with a wand in your hand.

Stealthing helps you not get seen....therefore not getting agro....therefore being almost assured of getting SA damage.

But there are many other ways as well. Most players don't notice the subtleties of monster behavior though. Many vets don't even know how to manage and predict agro......

    so let them sneak.

Every rogue should be sneaking into combat. It is a misnomer that sneak shouldn't be used in combat. I have been playing my rogue, who is my main, since day 1.

Sneaking lets you get close before you strike without getting aggro. It helps you stop getting aggro, even after a couple of hits. It is even more important now with the assassin build to ensure the mob doesn't see you coming.

The only time you should come out of sneak is when someone else in the party has established aggro or you have obviously been seen/found in sneak mode. Then it just hurts your attack rate to be sneaking while attacking.

    So, sneak away...

Actually rogues should pop in and out of sneak in order to not accidentally draw aggro before the melees do, and in order to attempt assassination.

Meaning if you feel an encounter is near go in sneak, let melees draw aggro, then come out of sneak to attack.

Which is totally what the prior poster said above me who I didn't read as I was instead only addressing an earlier post.

Wow. Just wow. You don't need to ever be in sneak mode to get sneak attacks. Not only is it a slower attack rate, but it does nothing for you.

Nobody here has said that you need to be in sneak mode to get a sneak attack, but aggro is the issue here. You cant get a sneak attack with aggro.

If the mob sees you, and you are the first thing it sees, you won't get a sneak attack.

Once someone else has established aggro, come out of sneak...

or instead of sneaking you could simply hang back a few steps and let it hit something else.

or you could use the diplomacy skill (preferably next to the caster that fingers everything the melees are pounding on)

or you could get a radiance weapon/guard

or not sweat it bc with subtle backstabbing/tharnes/etc you won't have aggro for long

    or just quit qqing

When you are fighting multiple enemies not everyone of them are going to get intimidated or hate raged until they are damaged and will go after the first person they see. Other monsters I do believe can block their LOS. Until those monsters lock on its best to be out of sight.

By the time you get radiance you should be in sneak almost all the time...if you are an assassin.
You can only assassinate in sneak mode.
