Was seven months of farming undeserving of this “Epic” item? I think not.
Are the devs contemplating making this epic item easier to obtain thus opening the potential to unbalance spell casters on a general scale. Again, I think not. (I'll touch on the subject of game balance in a minute.)
Is the Epic Ring of Spell Storing unbalanced relative to other sp healing items? No, the Mysterious Bauble is a comparatively easy to obtain level 18 item that offers 1/3 the spell point healing of the epic ring. The enormous effort and rarity of the epic ring justifies the extra charges of Major Mnemonic Aid.
If the ring is very difficult to obtain, poses no unbalancing risk to the future for casters and balances well against other sp healing items, why does Turbine want to nerf it? In a word, GREED. The difference between the current version of the Epic Spell Storing Ring (1057 sp on average) and the nerfed ring (532 sp on average) is the equivalent to the sp gained (502 sp on average) from one Concentrated Elixir of Major Mnemonic Enhancement (a.k.a. DDO store bought “Best SP Potion”). If you are thrifty when you buy your Turbine points and SP potions, that equates to TEN CENTS! Turbine is nerfing the Epic Spell Storing Ring to make an occasional extra dime!
If the difference from the current ring to the nerfed ring (525 sp on average) is unbalancing, why is Turbine offering an unlimited supply of potions for the equivalent of about dime each (when purchased on sale and in bulk)?
I don't know which thought is more offensive. The lack of value Turbine is placing on their customer's efforts to reach a goal by spending countless hours of their personal entertainment time and the lack of appreciation for the customer's subscription dollars during those months of grinding. Or, by slapping us in the face and nerfing our hard won prize while simultaneously offering the equivalent for about a DIME on the DDO store.
I am one of the lucky ones to own the Epic Spell Storing Ring. I imagine those who have worked as hard and have less to show would be totally demoralized by this announcement.
Turbine doesn't offer VIP accounts anymore. They have taken the “Very Important” away from “People” and instead they now have “Very Important Wallet” (i.e. subscriber) accounts which they still refer to as “VIP”.
