I allways liked the idea of a sentient weapon, but the examples i had seen are not very usefull and in time they end up driving me crazy (Lilarcor in Baldur´s Gate, Enserric in Neverwinter nights) i really found them like a colourfull item, but not more usefull than other items. If ths kind of weapons/items were added, PLEASE make them worthy of being use, not just a +X sword that says ramdom frases all the time.

Does anyone remember the sword from NWN, HotU? It was a Vampric sword, and the person soul had been absorbed that way. He wasnt really annoying except when he spoke during combat (Careful, you'll chip me!). I forget what advantages he gave you (other than being able to change his shape once, to make him usable by your character), but something simple like that could be implemented in the game.

Alternatively you could use the Soul gems to add an attribute to the weapon. For Example, adding an elemental damage type, or adding Keen.
The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get old ones out. Every mind is a building filled with archaic furniture. Clean out a corner of your mind and creativity will instantly fill it.

Maybe making a quest/chain where an intelligent weapon is introduced that stays in just that quest/chain.

If they're that good, it's a sign that they're too powerful. Someone who reincarnates eight times should still be able to run alongside a well-built character that never reincarnated, and both players should feel like they contribute.

That's the problem with greensteel; a DPS build with greensteel is in an entirely different league from a DPS build without greensteel. This might not be so bad if greensteel came to people who played the game often, but it doesn't; historically, the ONLY way to get tier 3 greensteel was by farming ONE QUEST. I appreciate your excitement, but new gear should NEVER make the old stuff seem like trash. It can be better, and it should be a little different, but the old stuff should still feel like a viable option.

Read the first edition DMG. The dungeon master can declare whatever he likes with respect to lore, so there's no reason why a sufficiently powerful being couldn't create a sentient item. I mean, what's the point of being a higher deity if you can't call talking cheese graters into existence? As a general rule, though, there's no way your garden variety archmage or demilich is ever going to create sentience from scratch. Of course, DDO isn't bound by pnp rules, especially not first edition.

    Default Becoming the Intelligent weapon

    Gorbadoc,
I had toyed with the idea about having a character becoming the weapon/item and after becoming the weapon my idea was to have the weapon account bound and end up in the shared space of a players bank account so any of the other characters in that acount would have access to it. If they had the requirements to use it.

wow, that would be amazing! of course you should be willing to "loose" a character in order to create the weapon.
Quick question about vampiric weapons: in one of the forgotten realms novels a character kills a shade (you know, a guy from the shadow plane) with a vampiric dagger, draining his life essence. That produced a change in the assassin, since the vampiric dagger channeled that shadow essence into him, his skin become darker and aparently he now ages slower than a regular human (shades have larger lifespans than humans). My question is: killing creatures with vampiric weapons gives you templates or something like that?
