Default How high should UMD be?

I have a bard currently and naturally UMD is one of the skills I chose to max out. The problem is, some of my items show a % higher than 100% and got me to thinking, 'Am I wasting my skill points in UMD?' So, as the title says, what is the level of UMD that I need to reach to be able to use everything UMD-able 100%?

You'll want at least a 39, which gives you a 95% chance to use heal scrolls. A 44 would be ideal as that encompasses greater teleport. As a note, i think mass heal requires a UMD of 48 but those scrolls are rare.

39 UMD is usually considered the goal to achieve; 39 UMD will allow using DC 40 scrolls (e.g. Heal, Reconstruct) without chance of failure.

My bards and rogues usually try to shoot for 43 (I prefer using Resurrection scrolls in battle).

    39 UMD is actually 100% on DC 40 scrolls: 39 + 1d20 = at least 40 ^^

Thanks for the good info. How is 44 UMD reached? Can anyone give a breakdown of what items/enhancements/stats/etc can make that possible?

    At lvl 20:

    - 23 ranks
    - 4 CHA modifier (assuming 8 base CHA + 6 item + 2 tome + 2 class enhancements)
    - 2 luck bonus (e.g. Head of Good Fortune)
    - 6 exceptional bonus to CHA skills (greensteel crafting)
    - 3 competence bonus to UMD (e.g. Golden Cartouche; Seven Fingered Gloves would provide +5)
    - 4 morale bonus (Greater Heroism)
    - 1 circumstance bonus (Focusing Chant)
    = 43 (45 with 7FG)

    and this assumes:
    - only 18 CHA (your CHA will likely be higher),
    - only +2 CHA tome,
    - no "Skill Focus: UMD" feat,
    - no exceptional CHA item,
    - no epic stuff (e.g. +7 CHA),
    - no alchemical bonuses to cha skills and cha (potions from collectors in house Deneith),
    - no short term boosts (Action Boost bonuses), such as Human Versatility.

Well my Cha was base 20 and I already ate a +1 Cha tome so I think I can reach that UMD easily. Thanks for all the replies guys!
