Default New to DDO Looking for Online Friends

    Hello Everyone,

I'm brand new to DDO, but not to online gaming. I've played Diablo 2 and WoW. I heard that DDO was a much deeper game with more mature play than WoW and that's perfect for me as I did quit playing that game. What I enjoy about an MMO? The fantasy, story and lore, and a good group quest/dungeon experience. I quit WoW because after all the 5 player dungeons are done, getting 10 or 25 folks together more often than not became a frusterating game of waiting around for rude people to show up late or never show up. DDO has a max of 6 to a group? Splendid. No more herding cats!

I'm really hoping to find some good people to have a lot of fun with. I play a serious game, dedicated, reliable, loyal... but at the same time, I'm not playing to be the .01% top elite player, I only want to have fun. I will show up on time if I accept a time for a group, I will be respectful, helpful, and (if I'm not poor) generous. I love grouping in MMOs and accomplishing those hard to beat quests you can't do alone, but only if folks are nice and having fun.

I won't know what I'm doing at first, of course being a noob, but I hope to find a good group of folks to share this experience with after I get up to speed. My first character will be named Ihtomyt Nesnayt once it finishes downloading. Glad to be here!

Most of the game has a max of 6 people, though raids are 12-man (note: a lot of em can be shortmanned).

I'm not really into static groups, but if you're on ghallanda, I'll be glad to help you out.

My suggestion is that you find a good, active guild with like-minded players. Do I know of such a guild? Why, yes I do.

    (Shameless guild promotion to follow)

On the Cannith server, drop in and check out the "Silver Legion". We're noob friendly, support casual play as well as end-game raids, and maintain family-friendly standards of conduct in terms of guild chat and in-game behavior. We normally have between 15-25 players online at most times of the day and night, including GMT.

I don't normally hang out here proselytizing for my guild (check out my post count), but from your introductory statement you seem like you may be a good fit for us.

Thanks for all the replies and tip links everyone, and for all the offers to help out! I just don't know which person's offer of friendship to choose. Servers can make that a pain sometimes. I haven't chosen a server yet, the game is still downloading.

Also, I don't think this is off-topic, as it may influence what people think as far as if they want to have me around all the time, but what general kind of class do any of you suggest? I like to group, but I fear that I won't always be online for grouping, so I want to be somewhat able to solo too. It looks like a WF wizard with some heal ability is good for both solo and group, but I get the feeling that that is some kind of overplayed cookie cutter build and a bit silly in some ways...

Would that be a good one or do any of you have suggestions for what you'd like me to play so that I will fit in and be wanted? That's the other thing I forgot to mention in my original post, I made a bad decision on my main in WoW (hunter... I'm not going into it haha) and I don't want to make that kind of mistake again.

Any class is good. Just pick the one you like.

WF wizard is indeed a build a lot of people like, but it's not like the whole place is packed with them.

The thing with DDO is that every class is strong and no class is overpowered.

Also, almost any class can take almost any role. Bards for example can be healer, crowd controller, melee and are mostly even a mix of those.

One thing to note though is that there are no typical tanks in this game and they are not really needed.
And clerics will mostly be expected to heal, even though they are good dpsers too.

Every class with UMD can heal using wands and scrolls.

I really recommend you to choose for yourself. Here's what the general roles are (and now I'm really doing something I shouldn't, which is saying this class does this):

    Barbarian: High damage, high hp.
    Bard: Support
Cleric: Healing and some good dps spells
Favored Soul: Like cleric but more bent on the fighting aspect (P2P or server favor reward)
Fighter: Like the barb but more versatile and less focused on the points that make the barb strong
Monk: Don't know much about this one so I won't say anything about it. (P2P)
Paladin: Melee burst damage with some burst heals (tricky without drow or 32pt)
Ranger: Most people go one of 2 sides here. Tempest melee or Arcane archer. Can selfheal using wands. Popular to splash rogue and fighter/monk for a lot of versatility.
    Rogue: dps and trapsmithing
Sorcerer: Some important buffs, crowd control, high damage spells. Has a lot of spell points
Wizard: Same spells as sorc but can freely switch em out at a shrine or tavern and has less sp. More versatile than sorc.

Note that you can always PUG in this game and it's quite easy to find a group and that DDO is an MMO and thus not really made for soloing (not that it's impossible, far from), but if you want to solo: read what's below.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you want to solo, you'll probably need to splash at least 1 rogue lvl for traps, self healing is also a must.
Read this link to learn about what's needed to solo: http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=214725
A good build that pops into my mind is the Tinkerer. Note that this build requires warforged, which is not free.

Oh no no no, I don't WANT to solo. After playing for just a bit earlier today through the tutorial and one quest solo, I see this game is not like D2 or WoW in that way. It feels in this game if your not grouping, you aren't really playing at all, but that also might be because I have no clue what I'm doing yet. Man I feel like a real noob with this game, it is really deep so its not as plug and play as some games. Lots to learn. I rolled on the Cannith server with a WF wizard. I am open to do otherwise though. I sure hope I can find some folks to play with and make some friends.
