Of course it really comes down to a comparison to the type of cookie vs cheesecake. I love good old fashioned chocolate chip cookies. These are a staple really. I also love a good plain new york cheesecake, maybe a little more. But the more you mess with the cheesecake, putting fruit and **** on it, different experimental flavors, etc. , it is no longer the awesome it once was. In this case the chocolate chip cookie takes the cake. Literally.

I see a number of posts saying that WoW is the most successful mmo. What makes it makes it the most successful?

Current subscriptions? Because it cant be over all money made or longevity. Because if either of those are important criteria EQ1 beats WoW hands down 11 years 16 expansions which I personally know someone who purchased each separately translates into more longevity and more profit. And yes EQ servers are still up and running with active accounts. And let me tell I wouls wager the money that WoW has made since it was released is less than what EQ had made at the time of WoW's release. The only reason WoW is known by everyone is the fact that Blizzard put a TON of money in advertising.

And before anyone asks Yes I have played WoW and when talking about the Success of EQ I was only taking EQ into account not EQ2 or EQOA.

Oh... I don't know something about 11.5 million subscriptions and a gross income of well over a billion dollars a year. (that's just rough numbers)

11.5 million subscription is a distorted number Blizzard is counting canceled subscriptions. And I am sorry I am just sick of reading on the forums of any game you go to how great WoW is. I left it because its not great. Its simple, cartoonish, and in the end booring. I dont know I really never see players of EvE, EQ 1or 2, COH, Linage or any other games make posts why there game is so great on these boards or EvE's for that matter. Is it because WoW is that great, no.

Its the same old **** as when we were kids and the whole My dad can beat up your dad debate. Its getting OLD. WoW players we dont go to your boards to talk about how great DDO is. Why are we talking about WoW here. Its not a benchmark its a POS!
    Sorry getting a lil angry

You can, you just have to play both. I do not believe you can post anywhere in but the F2P forums until you pay here.
It was that way when I started here I am uncertain if that is still true. There is MUCH complaining about everything in WoW on their forums and it often mentioned what is done well in other games. Would it go well over there if you started a thread that said DDO is better than WoW? Probably not, it would be just like what happens here. People who come to these forums who praise WoW and bash DDO or want to turn DDO into WoW are not being productive, I agree and squelching or ignorning is probably the proper coarse of action. People comparing the features and benefits of both in a fair non-insulting manner are just fine IMO. How often does that happen? Yeah probably not, people are so passionate about their choice of MMO, it is kinda crazy sometimes.

I am just weird. I knew so many great people who played WoW and had such an awesome time playing over there. I have met quite few great people here. I think both games are extremely well made both completely different but with some similarities. I prefer DDO now, I have more fun playing DDO. It truly is the perfect game for me. I am constantly pressured by my old guildmates to return to WoW, yet I resist. WoW problem was that it got old for me, too much like work. I am choosing to play DDO in a way that prevents it from turning into that anytime too soon. Basically I like both games and am friends and close to people who play both. I hate seeing either one the focus of ridicule or insults. I do wish Ex- WoW players would stop trying to bait people here, it is too easy to do and makes the good ex-WoW players look bad. Millions of people play WoW most of them are good people you never even notice. Some of them them are real tools and they are often impossible to ignore because that is what they want... to be noticed.

Whatever. EQ is "last generation." These annoying threads call on WoW because it's the current market leader in the genre. We ain't comparing 2010 Porsche's with Model T Fords.

Why compare at all? DDO is a great game if someone doesn't like you dont have to play it. But why come to the forum and say why "my game" is better.

WoW maybe next gen over EQ but it will never last as long. Nor will it have the true loyalty of DnD/DDO

If someone were to crunch the numbers I would hazard a guess that Blizzard's WoW revenue has already exceeded EQ1 revenue.. They had over $4 million in mount sales in ONE DAY. Server transfers, name and factions changes are increased becuase of the amount of people playing. The direct TV sales for people to WATCH Blizzcon is absurd. Monthls sub is more expensive than EQ1 too. I could be wrong but I am thinking WoW wins the revenue game vs EQ even considering the time difference. I believe EQ1 peak 450k subs WoW peak 12 million subs. 2008 WoW est revenue was 500 million from subs and cards just sick

I don't know whether it will last as long or not.

I suspect that Blizzard will purposefully phase it out over the next four years or so while they build up another. EQ did not really do themselves any favors by extending the life of that product for so long without the introduction of a new one. After so many years, it was nearly impossible for new players to join. All they were doing was milking the existing player base for as long as they'd pay. EQ2 should have happened long before it did.

Nor would I hazard guesses about "loyalty." It's a game, not your brother or mom. Even guilds move.

I agree that comparing them is pointless. That's why I support DrWhoFan's cookie campaign.

I agree. 100%. Amen. However, this doesn't change the fact that size does matter. (Despite what I keep telling myself) They are the biggest and most recognized MMO out there if you walk up to a man on the street and ask what's an MMO more will know WoW than any other. An unfortunate side effect is that a lot of people have tried it and therefore it's a common frame of reference for comparison.

If you want to compare...I would use a number of MMO's based on feature.

    WoW's UI modding
    EQ2's guild interface
    Tabula Rasa's crafting

You played all the way to the end? I was bored stiff by level 30 and quit. I think the problem was that I had played DDO first before I tried WOW.

Well, as the original question 'why' goes. I think lot of people come here from other MMOs and that is one reason. The other is - why, i'm bereft of notion - DDO seems to make the small steps to be like the other ones. The guild system - we'll see what comes of it. The epic token fragments subject to ninja looting - that's a move which leaves bad taste in my mouth and I'm having visions of DDO becoming more and more like WoW.
