Strange lag issues

I am a new player with VIP status. Bought the game disks and logged in with the CD key.
Last week game worked great May 17-21. Lag was 250-500 range always.
I played every day sometimes 6 or 7 hours at a time. No issues.

Then May 22 and 23 happened to be a weekend lag went thru the roof making the game unplayable.
I can play for a few minutes with small lag around 500ms or less then suddenly 60,000+ms lag.
I stop moving loss goes to 30% or more. After a few minutes back to less than 500ms.
Then repeat back to huge lag numbers. I tried to change game engine speed, frame rate speed, connection speed,
also did the change connection speed in the ddo.ini file under[net] settings.
None of these did anything to help. I did notice over the weekend the servers are well packed. More so than last week when I got had great connection speed.

I did not change anything with my computer during this week. Other than trying to fix the lag problems with DDO.
Why did it work fine last week and basically not at all over the weekend? Is it simply the crowded servers?
Does everyone have this problem when servers are crowded or just me?

Odd right after I posted this the lag problems stopped.
I am back to 500 ms or less.
Or well maybe not that lasted for about 15 minutes now I am back to lag over 10,000ms.
I did nothing at all to change this.
