As an Arcane Archer, Crossbows are right out since your imbues will only work with arrows.
As a Ranger, Longbow and Shortbow are where it's at because you can add your Strength bonus to damage.

Between Longbow and Shortbow, Longbow does an average of 1pt of damage more per hit and 3pts on crits.

In porting from PnP to DDO, the nuances of composite longbows, composite shortbows, longbows and shortbows is gone. So basically the composite acts exactly the same as the none-composite in terms of dmg dealt and enhancements (eg; elf ranged). Also the longbow is superior to the shortbow in terms of damage without any penalties.

So basically get the best longbow or composite longbow as a base range weapon.

You might also want to complete House Deneith favor for their ammo. Basically with House D ammo, you can just use the ammo to bypass an enemy's DR instead of hunting for a specific bow.

There is some weirdness with the speed that arrows travel from composite bows though. Not sure if it affects anything other than the animation though.
