I look at it this way.. if I am going to pay for the meal, I want to know I will like it. It isn't so much being picky as pragmatic..
To the person who just doesn't repeat a restaurant, that's great in a big city, but here in Montana, if we have more than 2 restaurants in a town, we call it a city. I happen to be in the biggest city in Montana, so I have like, over a dozen to choose from.
Everyone should just order a black olive and salami stromboli with mozarella and the world would be a happy place.
I am both of the people, I don't eat that much due to it not being one of my hobbies and I am forced to do it just to be able to wake up the next day feeling relatively ok, so if I have to eat then make it something I want to eat. I can eat everything except fish and marmalade. I can handle fish with loads of mayonaise though
But you get these items that you can eat forever, every day in fact....but then life gives you a kick and they change the chef who makes your food just perfectly, and now won't give out his new place of business so I can go there insteadIt's not the same.....
But at the end of the day, I was taught to finish my meal and not to waste. If it's on a plate it will most likely be returned empty, which is why I don't order food for a group. I don't expect everyone to be able to handle the same range of tastes as me.
Don't let common sense stop you...

I thought I'd post this here because it just seem appropriate. As someone has already stated, tastes change. A lot of kids don't like veggies and will not until they have grown up. Hence this story:
My little brother and I never did like certain veggies. The usual broccoli and cauliflower were pretty much at the top of that list. Mind you, we both liked different ones, but rarely the same. The one we always eat were mashed potatoes. Who doesn't like them, right?
The one day when I was in grade 7 or 8, I had asked our dad what we were having for supper and he told that we were having pork chops, potatoes, and cooked carrots. Ok, sounded good to me. Later, I walked by the kitchen and had seen him finely chop up some cauliflower and dump it into the mashed potatoes.
Me: How long have you been doing THAT?!
Dad: Oh, this...for YEARS.
Me: You sneaky, conniving, bast--
And like he said, he had been doing that for years because we didn't like cauliflower while growing up. All the second (if not third) helping of mashed potatoes. We ate it all up.
So I felt that I had to tell that story. I know some of you that are parents are probably gonna try that on their veggie-picky children.
Oh, and another thing: Apparently you can put butter nut squash in pumpkin pies and you would probably not even tell the difference. Yes, he had done THAT for years as well.![]()

Most excellent off-topic rant. I don't think I've ever had to coordinate a large office pizza order, but among friends at least I stipulate my requirements: I will require two slices of the pepperoni, and two of the sausage (or whatever relatively plain pizza I want), aside from that, order whatever y'all want. Woe unto them if I am denied my minimum requirements.
My fiancee does this. Nothing about me being a picky eater comes up, but I choose a restaurant depending on the exact food I want. Burrito, pizza, lasagna, burger...these all come from specific places. She always has to try something new, and hates it. Then I have to share mine with her.
