Gear Question

So I have a level 7 (soon to be 8) warforged paladin and I have realized that there is so much gear in this game...+1 of this, +3 of that, +1 flaming toilet bowl cleaner of ice flensing ooze. I think you get my point. My question is, when it comes down to choosing your basic gear, in my case right now a docent, am I better off going with a +3 docent or a +1 docent with some fancy additional features.

I know the fancy items serve particular purposes but is a +1 better than a +3?

I'm confused.

It completely depends upon what the fancy item description is. Also, it depends if you have decent AC or not. If you don't have around 25ish, then AC isn't going to matter to you. If that is the case, I would get the +1 Fancy Thingy over a plain +3 Docent.

A plain +3 Docent is better than a plain +1 Docent though. But a +1 Lesser Lightning Guard Docent of Lesser Acid Resistance is better than a +3 Docent, imo.
