I'm going to whine about my loot. Turbine...come closer, we need to talk.
Turbine I am a dwarven cleric, just shy of 20th level. To date, I've found one item that has "wowed" me: a +1 tome. That's it. Oh you give me stuff to be sure, but it's hardly exciting or even useful. Now I feel I "whine" with some just cause. As I said, I'm a dwarven cleric--NOT a warforged mage.
Why you insist or giving me docents & staffs, I have no idea. Perhaps this is a not so subtle hint at reincarnation? If so I'll direct you to my failed attempt as a wizard. I actually created this toon thinking, "Well if the dwarf can't use it, maybe someone else can..." That didn't last long and I ended that pathetic caster's existence for the benefit of all of Eberron. It's fair to say, that every four to five chest--on average cause during level 13-17 it was a solid three--every four to five chests, I got a docent and/or a staff.
I've been given enough docents to outfit every warforged character on Thelanis. I've been given enough staffs to create a line from the Orchard to the Reaver's Refuge.
While I have a bow--I'm not an archer. In fact, there has been maybe 8 times total I've used my bow. To be honest, I only bought the **** thing cause you guys love to give me arrows & bolts. Lots of arrows and bolts. Maybe I've missed some grand lore of a dwarven archer--not one comes to mind--but it isn't me. Not once in any group when we've needed a ranged attack, has anyone said, "Cleric can you make that shot?!" Why? Because they are sane whereas you folks have lost your minds! Either that or there is a glitch in your matrix and somewhere, perhaps on another server, there's a warforged mage getting dwarven axes and mithril armor.
I've suspected that loot is somehow linked to level. I haven't been wowed yet in the first 19. I will confess I was momentarily excited when I briefly read about "diplo-ing" a chest or quest giver to get a better reward. For a brief moment, I thought, "AHH that's what I'm not doing!!" Then my heart sank when I read it was a myth.
Tell ya what, I'll sell the bow and you stop giving me arrows--kay?
We also need to talk about your dragon "hoards." I admit I haven't DMed since 3rd Edition first hit the shelf, but I am familiar with treasure tables. Suffice to say, that in a dragon hoard, I have a chance of getting something--for lack of a better word--"sexy" in the hoard. An item that has some merit and might--just might--*gasp* be useful to me.
Nope.
I don't know where to begin, but I think your dragons raid K-Mart and/or flea markets. After running through Tor five times, my collective parties found one scale. Pathetic. I have my dragontouch armor before I have my dragonshard armor. There's something wrong with that. But after running through Tor and battling a gauntlet of giants, skeletal giants, gnolls, minotaurs, and trolls and defeating the White Dragon, all I can say is:
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!
Alright gold is gold. Fine. Running through the treasure mounds and collecting--awesome! What I'm collecting: ****! After all that battle do you really think any character would pick up: masterwork arrows? healing kits? throwing hammers (which I can't even use), shurikens (which I can't even use), a level 3 resist energy wand with 14 charges? You can't even give me a fully charged wand?--why would my toon pick up this junk???
Okay--it's random--I get it. But with a hoard couldn't you tweak it a bit? Give us a bit better, more useable, stuff? It's not "vendor trash" you're giving--it's litter. Junk. All three dragons---junk. What's next? Starter rags? How about that moldy quarterstaff the halfling gives you on the beach in Korthos?? That'd fit in! Maybe stick in a "tasty ham..."
And it's just not these hoards either. Did Prey of the Hunter too. Got a little crazy and we took on the dragons at the end (don't tell the patron). Drank three pots I bought at your store and hit the "hoard." Junk. Junk. and more Junk...and some Reader's Digests from '79!
My point is for dragon "hoards" these are pretty anemic. Breaking barrels in any random quest I could wind up with +1 arrows, but in a hoard--masterwork? Lame.
Now I'm not looking for a handout. I don't want it easy and I understand that it's cool to trade, sell, other types of equipment--just give me some OTHER types of equipment to trade or sell. I'm not asking for TOMES in every hoard, but c'mon masterwork arrows? healing kits (anyone really use those?)
OK...done whining Turbine. Let's start anew. Ease up on the arrows, give the docents to warforge, let the sorcs have the staffs, and just try to send me something useful from time to time.
