Firstly - sorry if I've treading over old ground but I had some thoughts I really wanted to share...
I've been thinking. The limitations on customising the look of our characters in-game, or more specifically what they're wearing, has long been annoying. Well behind even LOTRO which is apparently built on the same engine as DDO.
Boots, bracers, cloaks... doesn't matter what you've got equip you can't see any difference on the screen. Etc, etc. I'm sure there've been lots of threads on the specifics so I'll try not to spend too much time flogging that particular horse.
So why haven't Turbine responded to players complaints and improved this aspect when they've added so much other cool stuff over the years?
I'm guessing its most likely *because* they've added so much other cool stuff over the years. They just haven't had the resources to add fluff like tweaking the graphics so you can dye your armor, or see your boots.
It occured to me, that with City of Heroes, NCSoft have released several theme packs that include a variety of new costume options that you can only use if you buy the theme packs.
What if Turbine made a bunch of items available for purchase through the DDO store that let us customize our characters?
Imagine if your inventory screen had a few new "costume" slots (helmet, armor, boots, gloves, etc). That you could buy costume items in the DDO store to fit those slots, and the graphics for the costume items then over-rode the default outfit graphics you currently see. Maybe some items would just be dyes that let you control the color of the armor you picked up last adventure. Maybe there'd be a range of nation themed items (like Aundair Armor vs Karrnath Armor, one with fancy embossing & the other thicker, more practical, & so on), or faction themed items (like Silver Flame, Emerald Claw, or Dragonmarked Houses items) that you had to earn in-game favor to get before you could buy the theme packs in the DDO store.
I know I'd be happy to buy some extra Turbine points for that kind of thing (I certainly bought most of the CoH theme packs), but how many more? Since you can earn Turbine points to spend in the DDO Store by earning favor in-game you wouldn't necessarily have to spend real money, but of course if you're really keen you can.
Thats the poll part of this post: If Turbine released items via the DDO store that let you customize the look of your character, would you being willing to spend Turbine points on those items?
Maybe if enough people respond positively we can get Turbine's interest and finally get some boots & cloaks etc that we can actually see in-game!
What do you think?
