Default Resist Energy? What a mess...

I am a new player and after reading forums a lot of players suggested getting Resist Energy.

I thought, nice - I can cast a useful buff on party members and save some sp on healing.

I go to cast it on myself to check it out and then I find 6 sub categories (acid, cold, fire, etc...) with an 8 minute timer.

    ugh!

How do you know which resist to buff other players with when you are going into a dungeon.

I'm a new player - how am I supposed to know?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Ask the group if anyone has run the quest before and, if so, what resistances are needed.

    Otherwise you wont know.

This should prove to be a VERY valuable resource for you. Good luck.

After you select Resist Energy and the submenu pops up you can drag each element separately from the submenu to your hotbar.

Yeah, it's really hard to know in advance. I solo mostly with my FvS and normally put fire and sometimes acid on him. Fire seems to be the most typical damage type, and acid gets rid of those annoying ticks from Melf's.

Fire and Electricity are are useful in most places as a lot of mobs toss fire and electricity spells. If you see someone sizzling due to a melf's or acid spray.. hit em with acid. Watch the traps... if the rogue has to run through to get the box hit em with the appropriate resist. Like you said you will learn with experience and often people will ask.

Generally you know ahead of time what kind of monsters you'll be facing, and thus what kind of resistance you'll need. Sometimes all you have to do is look at the quest name..."Acid Wit" doesn't require much of the second word to comprehend the first.

8 minutes is just because you're low level. It gets up to 40 minutes with Extend at level 20.

Fire is the most common by far. At low-mid levels you see a lot of Melf's, so acid is good against Trog and Quickfoot casters. Lightning bolt for elite kobolds, and higher levels. Ice vs demons (flensers love to throw ice storms), sonic when going against devils (orthon repeating xbows), etc.

Are you thinking that each cast has an 8-minute cooldown timer? This is not the case. The spell lasts 1-min/level unless you have the metamagive feat Extend, active. This will double the time.

If that was not your understanding, then disregard the above.
