Default Question on Semantics of Reincarnation

When I look at the description for the hearts of wood, it says to level up before reincarnating.

Does this mean play the character until he just has enough XP to level and then go ahead and level so you don't lose XP (ie if you were 2 ranks into level 8, reincarnating would put you back right to level 8 XP and you'd lose those 2 ranks),

    or

does it mean to be sure to level if you are past the XP point for the next level (but have not yet levelled) so you don't lose that "next level" XP?

    Question clear as mud?:P

    thx,
    Des

If you already have enough xp to level up (i.e: your xp bar at the bottom is blue and you see the level-up icon at the top), level up before you lesser/greater reincarnate.
