    Default CC+healing build, NEED advice.

I want to make a healer... but i don't mean someone that just stands back and spams heals (IE healbot). i want to be preventing damage more than I'm restoring it, but i was only really able to find 1 post that had an acceptable build for this, and it was only a general guide rather than an actual build, so i made this based off the Pure-classed Offensive Caster Cleric build in Cleric Build Catalog 2010.

My main focus is CC while throwing out a damage spell every now and than, than healing what damage i wasn't able to outright prevent. The problem is i am a newb both to the game and cleric class, so have no idea if i screwed this up or not, so i really need advice about it.

You are missing a feat at level 12. I am not fond of hieghten but that is your choice I prefer greater spell focus in one of the areas you plan on casting most. Only things i would change would be to spend less in heal, listen and spot and add it to jump. Clerics jump like bricks so a little points spent in it help. Also buy yourself a +2 tome as soon as possible (level 8?) and get as high as possible +6 wisdom item for spell penetration. Other than that it looks ok.

Thank you for catching that i missed a feat at 12. like i said i am new, so i was just planning to get a tome as soon as i could, not exactly plan on it. i didnt actually spend anything in heal listen or spot, those just raised from my wisdom raising.

I added Empower Healing to the build and moved some feats around, but other than that i didnt change anything. heres the new build.

your feats look good to me. glad you took the spell penn feats later on since you wont need them until vale. Heighten is a great feat for offensive casting if you want your hold monster or greater command to still work at end game.

your stat placement works great for a 28 point build and if it ever gets to be a 32 i'd recommend putting the extra 4 points into strength.

My advice is drop divine vitality and the smiting enhancements (unless you are really going to use the smiting spells a lot) and take a the empower healing enhancements to lower you cost of empower heal. 6sp for 50% increase in all your healing spells is awsome. Also, you didnt take you cleric capstone enhancement.

Tbh, Spell Focus and Greater Spell Focus feats without Heighten don't really make any sense. If you are going to cast offensive spells, Heighten is (almost) compulsory.

To the OP: your build looks good. I would only change the alignment: chaotic good doesn't really bring anything to your build; almost any other option would be preferable.
On Thelanis: Hallelujah (EK wraith) - Jerryrigged Juggernaut (Fiend Warlock) - Sepulchral (Druid) - Chopchopchop (Monk) - Alleyshadow (retired gimped monkcher). Formerly on Keeper : Misericordia (Thug) - Mumbo Jumbo (Battle Caster) - Infernal Can (WF Kinda Cleric) - Halleluyah (Melee Spellsinger).

If you're on Thelanis, contact the Silver Flame Chapterhouse Guild. They hook up new clerics with gear.

Thank you very much for the advice, i took rendet's advice about dropping smiting for improved empower healing (though i only got 1 point of it, since i was just taking smiting to fill requirements, and i noticed 1 point would have been enough).

I'm on Argonessa but thank you for informing me of the guild.

Since it kinda messes up the chargen to go back and just get rid of an enhancement, i remade the build in the chargen, so heres the new one

Thank you very much for the advice, its helping so much.
Just quoting the build I'm looking over.

Your alignment should be True Neutral. TN lets you cast all spells (Some spells, like the level 4 alignment based spells, are restricted based on your character's alignment), but that's not such a big deal. TN lets you wear Taint of Evil items without suffering a negative level, which can be very nice. Also, TN let you take less damage from alignment based spell (Remember those unholy-damage arrows from the Desert? Not so threatening).

For your skills, dip one point at first level into Tumble, rest into Balance. Little detail, but it lets you tumble around in places like Stormreaver. Not really a big deal, though.

Mental Toughness isn't exactly worth a feat. Approximately 100 SP is really just a drop in the bucket at end game, so to speak. It's not bad to have at lower levels, but just make sure you respec out of it around level 15.

Toughness is sort of debatable. It's not a bad feat by any means. However, I think that we might be able to do better.

When you say Crowd Control, what are you focusing on? As in, what spells are you using? Cometfall? Blade Barrier? Greater Command? Hold Person? What are you specializing in? If we had a better idea of that, we could help a bit more.

Didn't know that about the alignments, i just picked chaotic good because it sounded cool and was hesitating changing it since i made the char, but I'm definitely gonna remake now that i know that, thank you very much.

I don't actually know which spells I'm gonna be using at higher levels since well... I've never seen high levels, so sorry i cant be more specific about that.

are there any suggestions for what feat to get instead of mental toughness? the only ones i can think of that would be better are spell focus, but as I've said, i don't know what spells ill be casting at high levels, so i don't know what spell school to focus on.

I'm sure your tired of me thanking you by now, but this has been a huge help so far, so thank you very very very much for the responses.

Here, I kinda agree: MT can be useful at low levels, but you can get rid of it at higher level.

I like those hp; on a human pure cleric, Toughness feat and its enhancements mean 53 (23 + 30) hp at lvl 20.
On Thelanis: Hallelujah (EK wraith) - Jerryrigged Juggernaut (Fiend Warlock) - Sepulchral (Druid) - Chopchopchop (Monk) - Alleyshadow (retired gimped monkcher). Formerly on Keeper : Misericordia (Thug) - Mumbo Jumbo (Battle Caster) - Infernal Can (WF Kinda Cleric) - Halleluyah (Melee Spellsinger).

    Debatable. Using reasonable numbers:

    160 (Cleric 20)
    20 (Heroic Durability)
    30 (Greater False Life)
    60 (+6 Con Item)
    60 (16 Con)
20 (+2 Tome, DDO Store Style!)
    10 (Dragonic Vitality)
    -----
    360 HP

20 more HP via Minos Legen. 45 more HP via Shroud HP item. I believe 450 is a suitable amount for end-game usable, particularly with quickened heal. It's a nice feat to have, but it's certainly not a build breaker.

Since this is your first cleric, there's no reason to specialize too much. This'll be a balanced cleric, able to cast well, as well as let you get a feel for a caster-oriented cleric:

    Cleric 20
    True Neutral
    Human

    STR: 10
    DEX: 8
    CON: 16
    INT: 8
    WIS: 18
    CHA: 8

    All level ups into Wisdom.

Max out Concentration, 1 point into Tumble; rest into Balance.

    1st: Empower Healing Spell
    1st: Toughness (Human Bonus)
    3rd: Extend Spell
    6th: Quicken Spell
    9th: Maximize Spell
    12th: Heighten Spell
    15th: Spell Penn.
    18th: Improved Spell Penn.

    Build is pretty basic.
    Enhancements should go into:
    Cleric Life Magic (Max)
Cleric Energy of the Zealot (Max)
    Cleric Empowered Healing (Max)
Cleric Prayer of Life (One point)
    Cleric Divine Healing (One point)
Cleric Wand and Scroll Mastery (Max)
Cleric Spell Penn. (Max, start investing in this at level 12. Earlier is a waste)
    Cleric Wisdom (Max)
    Human Adaptability: Wisdom
Human Adaptability: Constitution (Or whatever odd-numbered stat you have at that time is)
    Human Toughness (Max)

After that, everything is gravy. Should give you a good idea of what a basic cleric is like. If yo need help with gear or anything, I can set up a basic set.

Thank you so much, that looks like an awesome build... except, when i try putting it into the chargen, it only have 12 enhancement points able to be spent by lvl 5, which you need 14 in order to get any later enhancements. when i tried putting 2 points into random things just to let me advance, i obivously was missing 2 points at 20 and wasnt able to get one last enhancement listed there.

Is this a glitch with the char gen maybe? or is it really not possible? if it is just a glitch with the char gen or something i messed up on i am definately going to use that build.

A couple of enhancements have the pre-req of you needing to spend X amount of action points before being able to take the enhancement. So, you have to choose, "fillers," to make up that room.

Improved Human Healing a good choice. It's 2 AP, and lets you heal yourself for 10% more. That should solve that problem.

Smiting isn't bad to put in for filler, either. Searing Light is a nice spell.

Thats what i figured, but if i spend 2 points on fillers, i wont be able to max one of the ones you said to max, is this ok? or is there a way to partially respec and fix it at a later level?

You'll have 80 action points at level 20. You should be close to them all, if not at them all.

The spell focus you choose would depend on what you're going to use the most. Greater Command and Hold are both enchantments. Blade Barrier is an evocation and implosion are evocations, and BB gets a lot of use. Cometfall is a conjuration, not sure if there are any other useful conjurations to make the focus worth it. Seems to me evocation or enchantment would be the most useful though.

400-450 hp are certainly ok running non-epic stuff; in high-end content, I feel safer with Toughness and its enhancements, but it's a matter of personal taste.

Anyway, Toughness and its enhancements would also provide 40ish hp around lvl 10, when characters are usually weaker and not top-notch equipped. People might consider taking it and dropping it later.

Clerics and FvS can cast offensive spells belonging to several different schools:

    - Necromancy: e.g. Destruction, Harm and Inflict Wounds, some symbols (Weakness, Pain, Fear);
    - Evocation: e.g. Blade Barrier, Implosion, alignment-based spells (Holy Smite and such);
    - Conjuration: e.g. all healing spells (can nuke undead foes with them), Cometfall;
    - Abjuration: e.g. Banishment;
    - Enchantment: e.g. Greater Command, some symbols (Stunning, Persuasion).

Thus, it really depends on your playing-style.

To the OP: your build looks good. I would only change the alignment: chaotic good doesn't really bring anything to your build; almost any other option would be preferable.
I could be wrong here but my understanding of hieghten is that allows a caster to cast spells at thier highest allowable level, so if a spell says it can do 1d6 damage up to 15d6 at level 15 then what is the point once you are past the cap? With Focus you are adding +1 and then +1 for greater focus, allowing you to cast higher than your current level ie at level 20 its 22. Hieghten IMO is only good for lower levels while focus works for all levels. As I said I could be reading it wrong so maybe someone with more experience will be able to explain it better or correct me if I am wrong.

    Have fun.
