    Question Live Action Role Play...?

So we know a LOT of us have our roots in DnD pnp and some still play quite regularly. But with the weather breaking in the Midwest, I'm getting invites to the midwest LARPs (Live Action Role Play)...so I have to ask...

How many DDOers... are LARPers? What game do you play? Where at in the US (or outside the US).

I started KanaraK 8 years ago in Indiana, still going strong all these years later and are gearing up for another year of "weekend long" games.

While I have never LARPed, I am a member of the SCA - a medieval reenactment group. I am excited to break out my armor after the winter and get back to fighting. :-)

We have a local SCA group in the area. They use our "town" once a year for the Gathering in Indiana. We've have a few Players that cross over from theirs to ours...and vice versa.

I've played a few out here Connecticut way... more specifically between New Hampshire and New Jersey

Realms: (location based targets ie hit in the arm can't use the arm)
CRO: (Connecticut Roleplaying Organization: hp based armor as bonus hp)
LAW: (don't remember the acronym ... but I liked the setup of this one a lot: hp armor was DR complicated for those who can't do math in their heads)
NERO: hp based liked this one less than most others do to the power scale

    and currently I'm playing

Dystopia Rising: post apocalyptic Zombie larp hp based armor as bonus hp nerf guns allowed and brand spanking new website here
    http://www.dystopiarisinglarp.com/index.php

ther emay have been a couple of others I looked into but those are the ones that stood out the most... well for the Boffer Larps anyway.

Then a whole bunch of other RPS LARPs of the White Wolf persuasion... including the entire list of Camarilla LARPS between 98 and 2002

    Aesop

edit: oh yeah the SCA ... well very briefly that's not a LARP... thats a different mindset... some of the people are really nice and cool... some need the services of a skilled therapist and a lot of meds... I have some friends that are on one side ofr the other of that line, but I couldn't really get into it. Attended a couple of events in the NE though

Our game is actually based off Nero type Rules. Tweak a ton to remove the obvious flaws in their system. We're starting to pick up a few Nero players from the Chicago area... they all say the same thing as you did. Way too High powered.

We;ve gotten a few REALLY Good "Role Play" type people from them, which is always a plus.

There is also a system ... can't remember the name of it... one of the games that uses the rules though is called Madrigal and another is End Game I think

its a bit better as far as power goes.

Dystopia Rising isn't bad (was lots of fun last weekend), but it could use a number of tweaks... imo of course

Nero Rules lend themselves strongly towards bcoming overpowered.

Realms rules lend themselves to no real power growth unless you are a spell slinger... there are no skills in the Realms only spells. If you were a fighter you could use any weapon and any armor (no higher than 3 points per location I think). People always used to ask, "How do you get better as a fighter" we always answered, "practice". Rarely was it that they understood what we were talking about.

yeah a friend of mine is level 40 right now... the problem there is that at level 10 he was beating the level 40 people because he actually can fight well... now its rare for him to find a challenge

I've done some live-action role-playing in bed. I enjoy playing characters.

Hmm, mostly World of Darkness. Most have been a member of the SCA for near 15 years now, and recently Dagorhir.
There is an "Alternate" Forum, PM Strakeln for details.

I've never gotten into LARPing. I just sense from the few videos that I've seen that it wouldn't be as fun as I would hope (though I have never tried it, so I don't know for sure.)

Occasionally my machinist buddy and I will break out his set of dull aluminum swords after a few drinks too many and go to town on each other. The great thing about that is there's no disputing a hit - blood tells all. The bad thing is that you can wake up with some sore fingers.

A good larp weekend can be great had some of the best roleplaying ever they even did a couple of sessions that lasted a whole week. The games are best when everyone at least tries to role play and puts at least a little effort into costuming the low level is the most fun. One campaign there was some monsters with dr running around and only my wife and I had weapons capable of damaging them it was great most groups in town would avoid the area they dwelled in and our group would go out and everyone would make a shield wall and my wife and I would plunk away with our xbows until the beasts were dead for a while my wife and I were really popular and on demand at all times since some of the beasts would come to town for a snack later when everyone could damage the beasts they were no longer a threat but the game was fun for a while
