I just started up the downloader and it shows it's downloading the full 4.79 GB - this will take me several days to complete! - I was sort of expecting for some of the existing data from the original client to be used, saving me the need of re-downloading it - will it be, or will I have to wait several days before playing on lamannia?

It will not, nor will you have any characters on lamannia, and it seems that the character copy process is broken for copying to lamannia at the moment.
