heh
Both are outloud laughable at times.
It dawned on me a few weeks ago that I only ever saw a handfull of ST:TNG and just started watching them, all! I'm currently mid way through season 5 and regularily find myself laughing at how bad some of the writting is. I've seen a lot of the older TOS episodes and even some of those are bad. the thing I dislike the most about ST is time travel.
Star Wars was one of those things that was an elaborate idea with no direction that turned into a phenomena. Lucas is a hack job, always has been, might not always be. The first film is raw and retro which helped make it so damned memorable, but it tone will depend on which version of the first episode you get to watch; HAN SOLO SHOT FIRST!!
I could care less for most of the ST movies and other then SW and ESB there aren't any others that compell me.
Not in any order:
Star Trek: Wrath of Khan (great sci-fi suspense without horror and very little violence)
Star Wars (retro and everything seemed alien while almost familar)
Empire Strikes Back (the mood and directing kept this as one of the best SW films to date)
regardless, I find them all entertaining at times.
"Nuke 'm or Die!"
Star Wars, only because it has much funnier critical reviews

Seriously though, it used to be Star Wars until hamfisted CGI meddling and bad acting became the order of the day. The magic is long, long gone.

I was a fan of Star Trek for ten years before Star Wars was released. The effects of the first Star Wars blew everyone's socks off and revolutionized the way Science Fiction is regarded by the general population. For myself though, my preference is for Star Trek. I've been to some Star Trek conventions (one on my twenty-fifth birthday for the 25th anniversary convention in Sacramento, CA, where Shatner and Nimoy both appeared).
As far as the Kirk v. Picard comparison, I liked Picard more, but that's primarily because of Shatner's appearance on Saturday Night Live, where his resentment over having been typecast was all-too-apparent, and I've never forgiven him for his clearly-illustrated hostility for everything Star Trek, then. Stewart, by comparison, had already had some acting success when he appeared on the show (I liked him as Sejanus on "I, Claudius" and as Gurney Halleck in "Dune"), and was (in my humble opinion) a much better actor, seemingly thrilled to be part of the Star Trek phenomenon.
For long-time Star Trek fans like me, the last movie may have been the best one, yet. It hit all the right notes, the actors had the speech timing and patterns down well enough so that it wasn't hard to buy their actually playing those roles. Previously, I'd liked Insurrection, then The Voyage Home, then The Wrath of Khan best.

Things worthy of Standing Stone going EXTREME PREJUDICE™ on.:
- Epic and Legendary Mysterious ring upgrades, please.
- Change the stack size of filigree in the shared bank to 50. The 5 stack makes the shared bank worthless for storing filigree in a human usable manner.
- Fixing why I don't connect to the chat server for 5 minutes when I log into a game world.
- Fixing the wonky Lightning Sphere and Tactical Det firing by converting them to use alchemist spell arcing.
- Redoing the drop rates of tomes in generic and raid loot tables.
