Default Caster Level Check Vs. UMD BUG

I am reporting this bug for one of my guildmates:

    He is a Warforged 7 Wizard / 2 Rogue / 6 Fighter.

When casting reconstruct scrolls with the appropriate UMD gear, the game is using a caster level check instead of a UMD check on the scroll. This results in difficulty healing himself and other warforged members of our static group (a big problem since our main tank is robot!).

Not a bug. However, is highly annoying.

If he has a higher chance when using UMD as opposed to a caster level check, quite possible with Rogue levels and only 7 Wizard levels, and the game is still using a caster level check, then it is a bug. You're supposed to use whatever has a better chance.

However, I don't remember the caster level check DDO uses. It's not a straight current level +20 vs. needed level. It's something like the square of the difference between the needed level squared and you caster level squared. So in that case, (11)^2 - (7)^2 = roll^2. So in that case you need a 9. But don't take that as the word of God. If your UMD is under 30, it may well be that you have a better chance with a caster level check.

    What difficulty does it cause?

In such situations, I believe the system picks the best option: Reconstruct scrolls have DC 40 (i.e. 39 UMD for no-fail) and lvl 11 wizards can use them without UMD checks.

We know your friend is lvl 7 wizard, but what's his/her buffed UMD skill? In some situations, a caster level check might be more convenient than an UMD check.
On Thelanis: Hallelujah (EK wraith) - Jerryrigged Juggernaut (Fiend Warlock) - Sepulchral (Druid) - Chopchopchop (Monk) - Alleyshadow (retired gimped monkcher). Formerly on Keeper : Misericordia (Thug) - Mumbo Jumbo (Battle Caster) - Infernal Can (WF Kinda Cleric) - Halleluyah (Melee Spellsinger).

Your caster check for reco scrolls is 1d20+14 >= 22 to succeed. That means you need an 8 on a d20 to succeed.

Unless your friend has a UMD of 33 or better, the caster check is equal to or better than his UMD check.
