Does casting invisibility drop aggro from attacking monsters? Also, will they just stand where I last was and keep swinging, trying to hit me? I'm hoping that I could just use invis + tumble as a way to get out of things.

I can't say for sure, but I doubt it drops agro already received.
However it is still a good option to use if under attack IMO.
There is a couple different things that can happen.
Sometimes they will go into a sonar like attack mode. Attacking the air to get a lock on your current position, then move to there and try again.
but if they hit you , they usually will continue to know where you are for a while.
But if you move away from them, they might lose track of you and sometime lode interest.
Invis does help with agro. But usually to keep you from getting it in the first place.
I do seem to remember something about it moving you to thelast priority spot on their agro list though. But I haven't actually sen them lose agro from you if you already have it. Not that I can be sure of anyway.
And I'm pretty sure that if your spells effect them, then it counts as attacking them, for purposes of them knowing your location.
So casting firewall, then invis is useless in most cases. They wil run right to you and attack.
But there should be a 50% miss chance for being invisible though.
entering a fight Invised, then casting after they agro on someone else works best.
but if totally defensive, I do cast Invis in an attmept to get away and heal up.
And it seems to help a little.
Sry if that is a confusing answer.
Also, Invisibility, somehow, prevent greatly the insurgence of Dungeon Alert.
Invisibility is supposed to grant you a 50% miss chance. But just because you can't be seen, that doesn't mean you can't be found.
If you think about it, all invis really does is to grant you an infinitely high hide modifier against a mobs spot check.
But with sneaking, hide is only half of the equation. The other half is move silently against a mobs listen check. That's why an alerted mob knows generally where to swing when you've casted invis on yourself and try to move away- he can hear you doing it.
I have be Ghosting on my mage since his inception and my thoughts:
1) If they can't see you and you don't have to move you are golden
2) If you have to move (which you do) they will hear you unless you have decent move silently
3) If they sorta detect something in the area and don't pinpoint you, keep moving and you should be ok.
What is decent move silently? Well, 27ish around level 13-14 is good enough to keep most critters from hearing you. I don't know for higher levels yet. I do find Move Silently > Sneak for not being found (by about 3-4 points).
With that said, I find Invisibility's greatest value is running through wilderness zones to get to the dungeon you want. That isn't full proof either, as many mobs have See Invisibility.
When you activate invisibility in the heat of battle, the monsters will still know where you are, and will follow/target you normally. But if you can outrun them and gain sufficient distance between yourself and them, they will stop chasing you and de-aggro.
The distance is far shorter than the usual de-aggro range so invisibility is very useful in quests which don't have swarms of monsters with See Invisibility, and sometimes even in those. It's perfect for running through most slayer areas.
You can try Shadow Walk. Its the combo of displacement + haste + camouflage, should stack with invisibility and lasts much longer, like 40(?) minutes at level 20. This is useful when you need to run somewhere for a long time, usually scouting from outside a city area to a quest or explorer points the first time.
Alas, we don't have improved invisibility spell yet; however, as powerful as it is providing 50% concealment even after you attack, I doubt the buff is going to be like haste, i.e. short, and only goes up to 4 minutes at level 20.

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility
Has anyone tried the Wraith Form together with invis?
Im building a sort of solo-shadow-battle-mage, and I like the aspect of sneaking around
However, 2 extra feats (Necro /G Necro) and some AP seem quite expensive just for +20 to move silently.
