My sister-in-law's whole family lives in Chile, in and around Santiago. We're still waiting to hear if everybody is okay.

I hope Hawaii makes out okay with the tsunami.

Doc is in Hawaii as per her location status.

My BF is a survivor of Hurricane Katrina and I've heard through him about the horrors associated with natural disasters that aren't normally reported on the news.

My thoughts and wishes go out to anyone affected by this and I will be watching the coverage to see how I can help.

Sorry DWF - did not check location - :-(

I agree - these natural disasters are becoming a whole lot more commonplace - anyone read Richter 10 by Clarke and McQuay - makes you wonder!

Yeah..I thought this thread was in pretty bad taste until I saw DWF's location.
Im glad to hear everything is alright and the surfers are getting a chance to ride
some earthquakers. I hope all is well in Chile though...they got hit much worse and without
    warning.

Agreed - what happened to any warning they should have had?

My understanding is that an earthquake, which was powerful enough to knock people to the ground and that lasted up to 20 seconds, hit mainland Chile and that is why it hit parts of Chile so quickly. They say the depth of the earthquake directly results in the height of the tsunami

I dont think they got much warning because it happened right on top of them.

SO far...the chiliean government is handling well, so far. Far better than Haiti. So Kudos to them. But I hope that the death toll stays low. I'd say no death toll but that's too late.

Thank goodness they had strict building codes, even the best buildings can't survive 8.8, but they will hold up enough to allow escape. Chileans seem to be handling it well, according to CNN. THey will need to redo their roads.

We can't perdict earthquakes yet. Science is working on that. Regardless, there seems a ripple on the plate tectonics...I expect another major Earthquake somewhere nearby...but I am not Geologist.

Was just reading that it happened in the same fault location as the largest earthquake ever recorded: a 9.5 in 1960.
