    Default Holy Archer

    I was tossing the idea around a little and figured that an arcane archer based on a paladin could be fun.... IF zeal effects ranged rate of fire.

    If I remember you can't smite with a bow... but still.. with pally buffs it may work out.

    Has anyone though of doing this before?

    EDIT: re-reading kotc description, you don't get its extra damage on ranged attacks making KOTC III pretty much a waste on an archer character. believe it or not, HUNTER OF THE DEAD would be the paladin PrE to use with an arching paladin... shame there's so few high level undead. since i'm bored i'll draw one up.


    actually you could get bow strength and manyshot with just 1 ranger allowing DM III and kotc III. this is a trade off of melee damage though, since you won't be able to fit in many(if any) melee feats, you'd be pure archer

    here's a build i just threw together but it shows that kotc and AA full spec can both fit

    questions come up as to what paladin clicks work with ranged weapons, zeal and divince sacrifice being the big 2.

    in the event that DS doesn't work with ranged weapons, you could free up 9 AP(6 from DS and 3 from extra smite III) , and i actually question whether DS III > melee enhancements anyway... extra smite II is a pre-req for kotc so might as well put it towards DS II if it works with ranged.

    you obviously drop capstone for bow strength, not that bad of a trade off since the biggie about capstone is all weapons are "good" and the ability to juggle weapon+ammo for breaking DR is a suitable workaround and the +9 (+12 vs evil outsiders) to per-shot damage is comparable to the average damage boost weapons of good gives.

    this could actually be a strong build if they ever get ranged attack to be comparable to melee in terms of DPS. It's a STRONG ranged attacker.

    Interesting Build. The quest is though does your Smites count with a ranged weapon? Can anyone Verify this?

    I was unable to use Divine Sacrifice with throwing hammers earlier today. It gave the message, "Wrong weapon type" when I tried.

    I didn't try Exalted Smite and don't have access to zeal yet.

    Considering your most powerful paladin abilities (smite, and divine sacrifice) don't work with ranged... this would be one really disappointing build.

    Not gonna happen. We've been asking that for years. Closest you are going to see is arcane archerer PrE's
    ****, so that answers it then. I agree the build would be broken until you can use the Pally's abilities with ranged attacks.

    well i said i'd post a hunter of the dead version(hunter extra damage DOES work with ranged) so i will. but this would be an even less effective character than the kotc version.

    no smites, no sacrifice... against non-undead you're reliant on AA abilities by and large. you have a ton of lay on hands... but can't spare the AP to get the bonus lay on hands effects. you do have a metric s**tload of turn undeads to convert to divine might IIIs though, and that DOES work with ranged, so it does have that going for it.

    big knock against it is hunter of the dead requires 3 levels of improved turning, and those are just tossed away AP with the way turning (doesn't)work. throwing away 6 ap on a build concept that's gonna be extremely AP tight no matter what is a sin.

    unless and until we get some end-game content with large amounts of undead, this would be a VERY weak path to take... even worse its a late bloomer due to progression/level requirements for enhancements... you'd be weak early game AND weak late game

    possibly, at least to start. but as i mentioned current end-game contains very few undead and an abundance of evil outsiders. a hunter of the dead build by design is already extremely strong vs undead... its the whole point of the PrE. favored enemy: evil outsider while being completely useless at the level its taken balances out the overall build for the game as its played now.

    again, in the event that we start seeing a great deal of high level undead that could change, but you have to build towards current conditions not a hypothetical we've had 0 hints is part of the dev's plan. current conditions are: if you only get one favored enemy, it should be evil outsider.

    It's ok but it might be more adviseable to use a favored soal instead as they can get damage boneses with ranged equipment if you are going to become a silver flame favored soal.

    A pally would have some issues as a pure though so if you do I recomend a level of ranger.

    I tried to build one like that for a long, long time, but Favoured Souls don't get enough feats to take all the required bow feats as well as take Toughness and at least Empower Healing, all of which I think would be important. The only way to do it would be to splash some combination of Fighter, Ranger or Monk with the total level of splashes being three... But then you don't have any level 9 spells or your wings, so I just felt like, "what's the point?"
