What is enough UMD?

I haver a 14 bard and still feel much like a noob. The game has much more to uinderstand than any othe rgame i have played. Even more than when I played paper and pen back in the day....

Anyways, is there such a thing as "enough UMD" ?

Being a chaotic bard, from what I see to use just about any weapon I need a UMD of 20 (and appropriate level). Aside from that for gear, etc is there a spot I shoudl stop and start putting pts into something else?

I usually keep mine maxed. Bards get a ton of skill points so it doesnt hurt.

Scrolls are the bigger issue than weapons imo. I would shoot for mid 40's unbuffed at a minimum.

Generally, 40 is considered the top end goal. This allows no fail heal or GH scrolls. More is better as it will let use those scrolls if you get a penalty (i.e. neg levels) or use higher scrolls.

I would say shoot for a min of 39 or so and the more the better.

+43 is enough to no-fail resurrection scrolls. You will very rarely have a use for anything higher. But as someone else posted befroe, I'd recommend keeping it maxed. You never know what new item/scroll/etc will come out and you will want to be able to use it.

Also, if you switch to another skill, that new skill will be very sub-par. I cannot think of a skill Bards have access to that would be ok with so few ranks (after you have so heavily invested in UMD.)

52 lets you use level 9 scrolls with no fail.

AFAIK, that's the highest UMD check in the game. So that would be enough.

31 for no-fail Dimension Door Scrolls.
35 for no-fail Raise Dead Scrolls.
39 for no-fail Heal Scrolls.
43 for no-fail Resurrection Scrolls.
51 for no-fail on any scrolls.


Those are probably your benchmarks.
