Stuck in "Taming the Flames"

I just spent an hour running around and around "Taming the Flames", and I can't figure it out. I can't get past the following:

Fiery wall of force at far south - looks like a rectangular room past it
Horizontal fiery wall of force at far north - someone is shouting from underneath it, and map shows a shrine
T-intersection with closed valves both left and right in southwest

I checked everything I could for levers I might have missed, but nothing. The guy beneath horizontal fiery wall of force said something about "killing all mephits", but they stopped showing up with still 18 to go.

What am I missing? (White winter coins haul was pretty good though )

You have to take the south path to free the guy in the north path, and after you free him he opens the last barrier in the lower path.

Sounds like you missed a lever in the south path.

from the beginning, go right to get the key
after you get the key go left from entrance to reach a locked door, open that door with the key you grabbed ab it back, after killing the mephits, the barrier to the shrine should be open
talk with the guy next to the shrine and head back to the first lava room and pull the lever to open the door in there
continue on until you cleared the place and grabbed the scroll, then head back to the shrine and give the scroll to the guy in there
