The point of a rogue is to do whatever needs to be done to get the job done. No messy principles, or codes of combat (nothing says I have to kill the monsters, just be responsible for their deaths). Also, have you ever noticed that rogues are always the ones expected to go where others fear to tread? (Using traps to kill monsters works well on elite, often faster than you can do yourself. Just don't get caught rolling a "1", while standing in one when it goes off, heh)
Oh, and by the way, if you find yourself PUGing Inferno of the damned, and you have a halfway decent UMD, you might want to pick up some aoe cold spell scrolls, fire is not usually a problem, but every now and then you run into a sorc without any aoe cold, and you need it somewhere in that quest)
Also, you really cannot find a better rogue guide than Sable's Notes From a Dancing Rogue (http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=124401)

*in guild chat* Wow, that gimp can actually get the traps.
I don't think anything more needs to be said on pure trap rogues. Now assassins, those are awesome.
Even a gimped acrobat can find all the traps if he has good gears.
A couple things you can do right off the jump to make your rogue play easier. First, do you have toughness? Then the racial toughness enhancements? Getting rid of your squishiness is the first thing that can help you feel more productive. Second, get the Minos helm from the Orchard. You can get this as soon as you hit L10. This is going to give you 20 more HPs and 100% fortification. You won't do much as a rogue in the Orchard but you should easily be able to tag along with a group. Arcane's have an easy time soloing this and usually won't mind if you just tag along. You now have HPs. Make sure you get your 10 HPs when you get Arg favor as well once you do GH quests.
Make sure you take subtile backstabbing.
Assassin enhancements are expensive - but you should still have the enhancements to be able to get other things. Don't force assassin I too early. As long as you can get assassin II by L15 or 16 you are in good shape. Always wear a good search item. These are easy to find. Search is more important than spot. Spidey senses are cool, but usually someone in the party will know where the traps are and it's more important for you to search it. Always bring +5 tools, you will get tons of these. Pick up a +10 or more disable and open lock item. Again, these are really common and you can get them on the auction cheap. You should be able to keep all your rogue skills maxed with a solid intelligence. No reason not to take a good int - you get the skills and your INT is the base factor for assassinate.
Why play a rogue you ask? One of the more fun classes to play in my opinion. You will save a party wipe from time to time and everyone will love you. You're going to lead your party in kills more times than not. You can self heal with your UMD skill (always max UMD, but you already know that). It's fun to get traps and walk through them without being hit. You're going to feel a great sense of pride when you get through the water in Crucible. They can't do VoN without you. A good rogue will make a party much better.
This isn't even mentioning some of the raid grear and greensteel listed in this thread. Once you get those, you'll be a god. But you certainly don't need them as you level to be effective and have a lot of fun.
Consider foregoing 'spot' if you are short on skill points. You will learn where traps are or people will point them out to you. You could put surplus points in other skills, say haggle to make more money or whatever you fancy.
A few points in spot will help you to see camouflaged mobs, but apart from that it is not a terribly useful skill.

and then again i have also been kicked for not useing wall of fire on blackbones so.,,
While I agree that assassins are awesome, why would you put 8 int on ANY rogue in the first place? The int factors into the assassination attempt dc as well as traps.
60-65 sounds about right for total mod. on trap skills.
I find it entertaining when I play my full rogue and the str based players who have a few rogue levels try to step in front of me and do the traps like they got something to prove. They usually either die from a failed save when the box is on the other side of the trap, or blow the trap at some point, and then the party has to find a way around / through it.
Now THATS a gimped rogue.
All I had to do was play one cleric to see that 80% of pure rogues dont know how to play the class and live. Its all damage damage damage damage - see I can pull aggro off everyone but the caster....CRUNCH, DING,... x_X
Any skill in the game can be rocked into the 80s - not that its needed but it can be done - 60s for a damage rogue is acceptable.

Oh, wait, it was spelled right?
