Default Duo Build for my son and I

    Good day,

My son (8) and I have started playing DDO together. I was hopeing that someone might be able to help with advice on a good Duo build.

We have Drow and FVS, but not 32 point builds.

My son really wants to play a damage dealer. He is a bit slow in casting spells, but can if given a second.

I don't really mind being the caster/healer but I like to mix it up a bit also.

Any suggestions for a youngster (CHARGE!) and an old man (Slow down son!) duo?

I would like for him to be able to cross heal a LITTLE... but it is not a primary concern...

Thank you for any help you might be able to provide!

    T

You shouldn't have much of a problem being a primary healer, and you should still be able to mix it up in melee when you need to. (If you're primary healer though, jumping in melee won't be the best idea, since you can't fight and cast at once. Mainly, you'll be able to switch gears when needed). I built it assuming 0 tomes, but if you don't mind using them, then drop DEX and CHA by a point each and start with 17 STR. You'll be able to cast all of your spells if you use a CHA item. Since your spell DCs are based on WIS though, you won't be able to offensively cast, so focus mainly on buffs and healing.

This doesn't really have a lot of clickies or lots of spells that he would need to cast, so this should be good for him this way. He'll need a +3 WIS item before he can cast level 1 spells though, so he probably won't be casting 'till around level 9. When he does start to cast, the important spells for him are Resist Energy, Ram's Might, the Cure spells, Longstrider/Mass Longstrider, Freedom of Movement and maybe one of the pets. Again, this uses no tomes.

Note: He should use Dwarven Axes since he gets racial bonuses to them, and scimitars for you for the same reason.

I recently ask something similar in a thread over in General DDO Discussion.

I got some pretty good feedback ( a little bit more general than the posted builds ) and wanted to point you to it since I found the replies helpful.

Another thought is if you have Warforged

He can be a WF Barbarian
You can be a WF Wizard or Wiz/Rogue

You can then heal both of you when needed

That's exactly what I first thought. More specifically 2H on the WF Barb and definately 2 Rogue levels on the WF Wiz. Less melee for you, but very versatile as you can buff, damage, and also handle traps. You'll be as hard to kill on the WF Wiz/Ro as the Barb, given you'll have plenty of HP, Evasion, and self-healing. Really that's a nearly perfect solo build, so having your son play a massive HP DPS focused character that you can heal is ideal support.

Also, neither of these builds are very gear dependant. As the first/main characters you 2 will be leveling together as a duo, the lack of gear needed is important. In the first suggestion, 2 two-weapon characters will be quite a bit harder to self-equip. 4 level appropriate weapons of each type? Difficult! Instead needing just one good weapon of each type on the Barb will be handy.

    This is true.

You don't really find a lot of "good"* gear until you start doing level 10+ quests. A notable exception though is the Sharn Syndicate series. The nicked items from the quest chain (one-time completion) and the last quest Come Out and Slay are often times much better that what you'd find other places around that level range (unless you get lucky with the loot tables). While there isn't a Nicked Dwarven Axe, you can get Nicked Shortswords, Longswords, Scimitars, Maces, Longbows and Greatswords there. (Also Nicked Kamas, but neither of you will have prof.)

*: Good of course is dependent upon your level and grind abilities.

If you do decide to go the two-WF Wizzy/Barb path, then if you have Delera's Tomb, there is a named Greataxe that is given at the end that has a 10% critical range base and is Keen (double threat range), so that will be the best damaging weapon you'll probably get for a while that way.

Either way, I suggest you either run Durk's Got a Secret a few times (it's in the harbor, a level 3 quest if I remember correctly), since you have a possibility to get a named club called Muckbane. It won't corrode when you hit oozes with it, which will make the early levels easier. Alternatively, you could buy cheap Mauls or Greatclubs from the amory and just use those 'till they break, then buy new ones.

You'll also need a pair of bludgeon weapons (for skeletons) and a pair of slashing weapons (for zombies) for each character that is melee.

The issue with being a trapsmithing wizard that I would forsee is, is that in addition to training Search, Disable Device (and probably UMD), you'll also need to buy items to boost those skills. Often times I find that when you get to the mid levels, new players can't afford to buy the required Search or DD gear since they're so expensive on AH (this is on Cannith, I don't know how it is on other servers).

Other than that, the two-Warforged idea works out pretty well also. Just make sure he isn't constantly activating Frenzy when you're low on SP.

Well most wiz/ro characters have higher INT than a pure rogue or ranger/rogue would starting out, and that is even more true over time. A 9th level rogue that started at 16 and ate a +2 tome at 7th and has a +4 INT item (max at that level) is at 22. A Wiz/Ro that starts at 18 INT hits that with only a +2 item given the 2 levels-ups in INT. At that INT, if the Wiz/Ro has only +5 or +7 rogue skill items instead of the max for the level, they're not going to have any issues. This means you can get get gear that isn't perfect -- like +7 spot with somethign useless min level 9, instead of "clean" gear if needed, which is much cheaper.

It only gets better with more levels. By endgame that rogues INT need +3 tomes and exceptional INT items to get further, while a Wiz/Ro will be at 30 INT easy. Not that the pure rogue would, they have class enhancements to use instead if needed. Just showing that the INT advantage gives the Wiz/Ro and easy start, and scales nicely over time. And that's the main thing, given it's the INT bonus that affects search and disable, the two most important rogue skills.
Now one more hint for cheap rogue gear: goggles, goggles, goggles. You can get spot, search and disable all on goggles. Get all 3 the best you can, upgrading over time to the max for you level you can find/buy. Put them in that order on your search bar. Wear spot all the time until you need to search for a trap. Search goggles to search ovbiously, then once you see the boxes Disable to disable them of course. It's a slot that generally won't conflict for other items you'd want/need, they're inexpensive compared to rings, swap quickly...

Your spot may not be great, given WIS will be low, but that's not so important. Keep the skill maxed and do the best you can with items. Neither of you will have to worry too much about traps. The barb will have the HP to "find" them the hard way when "oops" happens, and a Wiz/Ro needs just one thing to have great evasion: the Insightful Reflexes feat. Given all the free metamagics Wizards get, it's a no-brainer to get that at or before your second rogue level. Which should be at level 8-10ish, to help skill point optimization. You don't really need the evasion until then anyway...

Wow. Lots of information there! He is not really into Warforged, but really likes Drow.

I think I have him talked into a grumpy Dwarf though! =D

    Any suggestions for Drow Builds?

Thank you again for all your attention and time! And thanks for the link to the further discussion. Now I just have to study it so I can wrap my brain around it!

If you are on Khyber, I would be willing to send you some plat. That way you may not have to worry about getting money for potions, etc and you and your son can focus on questing. Please pm me your character name (if on Khyber) and I will send it to you in game. I could also try to send some lowbie equipment too.

My son started college last fall. I really miss him. We often did things like this together. Total pwnage in Counter Strike! I would be more than happy to help you and your son with your gaming.

I sure know what you mean...my son left for the Army in the summer. He always kicks my butt on shooter games but I hold my own on online fantasy games, lol. We are planning to duo as well on Khyber. I have a human Wizard at 5th level named Alirik. He will probably be a melee character. I am fairly new to DDO and don't have any high level characters to twink Alirik so I would really appreciate any donations to buy gear. Thank you and wish your son good luck out in the worls for me.

See if you can find a charisma item or put some AP into the FVS Charisma enhancements. You need a charisma of 10 plus the spell level to cast so 11 for your first level spells and his build only started with 10.

Yes, you need to use a +CHA item to get your ability stat high enough to cast.

Interestingly enough, I do play on Cannith, and I'd also be willing to send you guys some gear and plat. You can PM me your character name and I can see about getting you some CHA items and both of you some lowbie weapons.

    EDIT:
    Any suggestions for Drow Builds?
There are a few classes where Drow is more beneficial, but I'd say we didn't mention them because of the large amount of abilities you would need to juggle.

For example, Drow can make good Wizards and Sorcerers for the +2 to the casting stat (though you would need to be wary of the -2 to CON on a low hit-dice class), but I didn't think it would be a good fit for your son since he'd have to juggle casting several spells in combat. They also make good Paladins, but Paladins need to be fed with Divine Might, Divine Favor, Divine Sacrifice, Zeal and Exalted Smites which can take some concentration especially in large battles. Drow can also make good Rogues, but if he runs ahead a lot, it would just have him turn into a dead rogue.

Default I play with my 6 year old son ...

and I love it! There are two main problems. First, he can't read yet so I spend a lot of time explaining what is going on and that sort of thing. He also tends to accept any blind invite he gets because he doesn't know any better and then he ends up frustrating his new found party because they try to communicate and he can't read! This problem will eventually solve itself.

The second issue is ... he could careless what build would be useful or which build would balance my character. He likes the flavor of the day. As a result, he re-rolls at least once a week and I have spent so much time on Korthos that I am going to be the next mayor there! For now, my son has settled on a ranger and he seems to like that so maybe we will be able to advance past 3rd level!

Anyway ... its great to play this game with your kids.

I know that there appears to be an issue with wfs for you guys, but I highly recommend them for duoing.

I have a couple duo teams that I run with my kids. They are all the same builds, but of course the kids won't share a toon so I have three duos.

All of them are composed of the kids toon, a WF Barbarian, and my toon, a WF Wizzie/Rogue.

The barbarian build is straight forward. Max out Constitution, then Strength. Take Two Handed Fighting, and whatever weapon they happen to really like gets the Improved Crit feat chains.

My toon is not much more complicated. First level Rogue, then three levels of Wizzie, then one level of Rogue, then the rest Wizzie. Max out Intel, then put Str to 10, and anything left into Constitution. For feats Extend becomes vital right away since my kids aren't really tuned into the mechanics enough to know that when the countdown timer for buffs is getting low they should pause before charging into a horde of angry mobs.

At low levels I usually load up Masters Touch and Mage Armor and fight along with the kids. At mid levels I tend to buff them up, snag the traps, and keep them standing unless they are being goofy at which point I let them die (and you should have seen the look my 9 year old daughter gave me after I let her die in STK for aggroing half the hobgoblins at once. I told her I would get her stone to the shrine if she took the garbage out )

It also helps to have a handful of clickies that I keep in the account bank for Remove Curse, Lesser Restoration, Jump, and a few others. That way whoever is playing can grab them and I don't need to search all over the AH for three different sets of clickies.

Good luck with the duoing with the kids. It can be very rewarding. None of my kids are at a stage where I would want them pugging, since I think that they would either need a very patient group or another bunch of kids, but it is still a lot of fun.

    My favorite moments playing with my kids include;

After my seven year old runs ahead without waiting for a heal, triggers the fire trap in Durks, panics, and stands in it until she dies, she says 'who would put something like that there? Somebody could get hurt!'

My five year old developed the habit of roaring at his enemies before he fights with them. It didn't translate well into Timbits hockey practice. After his first encounter with a giant, he said that giants have bums. His sister said everyone has a bum. He says back, 'Not Beholders. Beholders don't have bums.' His kindergarten teacher sent me a note indicating that this was not an appropriate subject for show and tell.

My nine year old runs into the 'end' room in the first part of Tangleroot, then stops moving. I am desperately trying to heal her, then I grab aggro to try and save her life, and run back down the hallway while yelling across the room at her 'keep trying to move, hit the right mouse key, hit the right mouse key!' She yells back I am trying I am trying its not working.....then on party chat comes this tell. "Hi Daddy Pooooaswwwwaassddddwswwwddwwsssssaasssss'

On my five year olds toon I maxed out intimdate, since I had come across an intimidate item. I hotkeyed it for him to the F key. To prompt him to use it I tell him to 'get tough'. At hockey practice he ran into another player, and was crying. I told him to be tough, and he looked up at me with tears in his eyes and said 'I can't be tough because the F key is all the way at our house'.
