I have been using Handwraps, but should I look for a good staff to use at level 3 or just keep the handwraps? how are they classified? 2h or 1h weapon, they only take up one slot in the char. sheet, so im guessing they are 2handed.

"Drive it like you stole it"
Handwraps are two weapons (the fists are the weapons, the wraps are adds ons to the fists). At low and mid levels, for a new character (I assume it doesn't have a lot of plat), the best choices are driven by what you can afford. At lower levels (say less than 6), the difference between wraps, staffs and kamas is negligible compared to the effects on the weapons.
At level 4, if you are lucky you may be able to find a weapon something like a Shock of Pure Good where the Shock is typically adding a D6 damage to every hit and so is the pure good. Get the best weapons you can afford at this level, regardless of type. If you have the choice, get wraps, they will be useful longer.
As you go up in levels, the playing field will tilt and handwraps will be by far the better choice since your unarmed damage die will get bigger and bigger. So at high levels monks almost always use wraps as their normal weapons. The main exception being that Vorpal Wraps don't exist, so most high level monks also have a pair of vorpal kamas. I also like to carry a Paralyzing Quarter Staff so I can fight air elementals from a bit further away.

Handwraps are always better. Take the Two-Weapon Fighting Feats, that works with Handwraps. This is a command! Take TWF Feats!
However, carry good Kamas for slashing up zombies with too.
