Default I just got to say this

I am still a new player, I started in September. I have a monk up to level 13 and I have to say it is my favorite toon. It does things that my higher level character has trouble with. I can tool around in the sands and gianthold doing slayer/rares solo without much worry. I can solo a wide variety of quests at or above my level. I am just loving this character. My build is a 32 point build, but I don't have a bunch of elite items. I did purchase a +2 wis tome from the store, and a +1 dex tome off of AH, but otherwise I haven't had to do anything special. I am still learning how to get my finishing moves off in a ay to be helpful to the party though.

I'd so roll my monk if I had 32point builds, but for now just gonna keep my 18ranger/2monk

The biggest tip I have for that is to remember that if you have a mob (or yourself) targeted the buff finishers are centered on you but you can target someone else with them. This is most important for aligning the heavens since usually your caster type isn't going to be up there next to you while you're meleeing. So target that cleric, FVS, Sorc, or Wiz who is standing in the back before you use that buff and it will benefit them a lot more You also don't need to be hitting something to build and cast a finisher as long as you have enough ki (which you can always meditate for). I like to throw out an aligning the heavens before the casters buff the party too. It saves a lot of spell points.

I'm glad you are liking the monk, they are one of my favourite classes too. I played one as a 28 point build and then rerolled when I got 32 point builds and had a little more knowledge. They really do benefit so much from those few extra points.

What I spend a fair bit of time noodling on is whether the monk is a strong class relative to others...

No, I never said that. Now, I may believe that, but I never said that.
