Dear Turbine,

Can we make some old names available again? You could, for example, free up names that have been inactive for more than 1 year. When (if) they come back, they get a hyphenated name. You could refrain from giving the free name change token and make some extra $$ by giving them some funny hyphenated endings... like ~Suggleums... or ~longforgotten.

This would free up, most likely, a huge assortment of cool names.

Long before Mod 9 I made up a whole process on how this could be done, and nothing ever became of it.

Aye, I remember that thread. It's a very good idea, I wouldn't mind expanding the date a bit farther than one year. I'd imagine the majority of "ideal" names were taken around sign up by people jamming their account with name-savers and leaving the game. (I have no proof of this, merely conjecture)

What clay is proposing would be anything past a year so all those around sign up would be forfeited for non use.

Turbine reps on multiple occassions have said they will never do this as it discourages returning players. Use a little creativity in your naming, it isn't hard.

The one thing Turbine should do is allow longer names, numbers in names (at least for WF), and apostrophes and hyphens in names.

Maybe they should do something like Funcom did with AoC. Since my sub has been inactive for 8 months, I recently received an email saying that if I don't renew my subscription that all my characters below lvl 20 (the cap is 80) will be deleted.

Maybe Turbine could send out emails to those with inactive subs and delete all of their characters levels 4 and below if they don't renew within a month. This is to free up server resources of course

I thought they should do this for a long time now, and especially with the influx of "new" players now.

I tend to head back to certain mmo's whenever feeling a bit burnt out on my present main game. Play them for a month or so and cancel again. Sometimes this ends up switching my main game for a bit.

If I had come back to renamed or deleted characters...the game would be dead to me. Sometimes it has been more then a year, or even two between visits. Sometimes games improve with age.

Turbine stated in an earlier thread that they would never make inactive names available - but then again they also have said they never change old quests....

Other MMOs do it, Age of Conan just sent me an email saying they were going to delete my characters...

I cannot see how recycling names that have been inactive for over 3 years would be an issue. Of course it all depends on how big of a chore this task would be for Turbine. But anyone inactive since 2007, why not change there name from Olddude to Olddude-inactive.

Recycle the entire list of unused names. That is unless you all dig those xxOlddudexx character names out there.

At the very least, allow some versatility by adding more special characters and/or selective caps for first names:

I think the level minimum involved would actually be a really good compromise. However, that being said, with veteran status, I would use a higher level than 4 as the cutoff. Anyone oldtime player is not going to be too worried about a long forgotten alt.

Example, you could have several characters with the name John, so long as they used different last names, so the result would still be only one John Doe, but you could also have John Smith, John Q-Public, etc, etc, etc.

I'm pretty sure that Drizzt's mommy wasn't the only one in all of Faerun to name her son Drizzt, for that matter she probably wasn't the only Drow to name her son Drizzt, he just happens to be very famous.
