Default Please explain how "To Hit" is calculated!!!

This is my first Melee and my "to Hit" number is driving my mad. Sometimes I have a 25 with buffs and at other times it goes to over 40 seemingly with the same buffs. At times when I'm in a party my To Hit goes down when I cast a buff on myself. I've seem my numbers as high as 49 and as low as 30 within the same fight. When I self buff I can get to about 30.

    I am a level 16 Fvs/2 Monk Melee build

    HELP!!!!!!!!!

    Skeevers of ■Ghallanda

If you know of way to help me get this number higher and keep it there, I'd much appreciate it

    To Hit 101...

In DDO (and D&D) you have a basic to hit bonus that is pretty static, depends on your class and level (BAB), your gear (+5 weapon for example) and your Feats and Enhancements.

There are things that provide a constant boost to your to hit score. Spells like Greater Heroism add +4 while the spell is going. Haste adds +1 while the spell is going, Bard songs add a fixed number (depends on the skill of the bard) while the Song effects last.

There are things which can provide very short term boost to your to hit score, like a Class Boost (Fighter for example, can trigger a 20 second attack boost for more hit bonus).

There are situtional boosts. Like when you are flanking a mob, you gain a +2 to hit bonus. When you are moving (unless you have spring attack) all attacks have a -4 to hit bonus modifier applied.

Finally you have the Attack Sequence progression. In DDO it is an increasing progression. At low levels you only get your basic BAB for each swing. At higher levels (and BAB) you get faster swings and swings after the first become more accurate and gain to hit bonuses of +5 and then +10...etc.

So it is perfectly normal to see variations in your to hit bonuses, that is how the game is built.

    Question

What about the fact that youroll a d20 each attack? I have been gone well over a year, but they do still use the d20 system dont they? LOL
Fighters do it face to face, Rogues may do it from behind, Rangers can do it from a distance, Wizards do it from out of nowhere, Clerics may not do it at all, Barbarians may do it in a rage, Sorcerers can do it on a whim, Bards on a note, but Paladins have to pay for it.
