    Default Why do maps reset?

As a horrible gamer I am much more used to reading my minimap and the ingame map for my heading than noticing a certain way a landmark looks. Whether this is me being a horrible person or if it is just a different play style, that is your call. However, with all of my experience in DnD, you would think if you went to a place 914204 (slight hyperbole) times like I have to the Menechtarun Desert, you would keep a map handy.

    Thoughts? Prayers? Bashing?

If there really is a good reason, I'd just like to know.

I think that the mechanic could be cool if each toon had to uncover a map and then it stayed uncovered forever. Unfortunately the amount of data storage just on where each character has been would be counterproductive, so they clear em out every week or so it seems. I agree with you, it is annoying. Just revert the explorer area maps to the way they were.

I would also think that there would be a map notes system where you could write your own, but...

I would have figured that the information would be kept client side, that's all.

I guess the data thing works as a reason.

I have memorized my way to the 5 bloodstone chests, but the other ways I still get a little off track.

Every time I go in there's usually only 1 undead boss spawned.

There are 2 bloodstone chests. The mephit on the way to the corner and the thirsty one skele. I know you know this but many on these forums will jump all over you for any incorrect numbers on anything.

Strange. One of my guildies has pulled one out of the chest that is right next to the thirsty one, just above him.

Maybe they count as the "same chest?"

I shall just change what I said to "Wow, I reset the desert all the time and that **** mephit and the skellie are never up!"

My guess is that they currently code maps in a very memory-expensive manner. And adding a database value for every map in the game to every player could be pretty terrible.

The maps used to be 'open', they then added the 'Fog of War' (or some such name).

I actually prefer it foggy. I like to know where Ive still to go, I'd actually prefer if it was to reset every five minutes like the are. The light fog of war is just too light for my eyes to make any real difference.

And your guildie didnt pull a Bloodstone from any other chest. There are two chests.

He may have pulled a bloodstone, but not a Bloodstone.

I might just be confusing the chest then.

Either way, he's pulled about 6 of them in a couple months. It's rather disheartening.

And I would be ECSTATIC if it were just fog of war instead of a reset.

I agree with the just having a Fog of War over it. Like what happens on a soft reset.

Like lets say that you go and explorer everything the fog isn't there right now. You zone out for 5 minutes and reenter the fog is up, but you can see everything. Close the game for a bit and log back in and it's all black. If it could save it to where it's always just the fog instead of resetting the map would be nice.

I believe I read somewhere that only the 3 most recent areas you have visited will have saved map data. That is to say "explorer areas".

The slight darkening (fog of war) resets often, but your actual map resets when you have visited 3 new areas IIRC. In the last couple updates, things were changed so every character saved the last 3 maps. If you do the same quest over and over, you will see its map remains uncovered except for the slight darkening of the fog of war. If you go and do 6 other quests, then come back, all you get is black.

If you really care about having a permanent map, there is nothing stopping you from exploring an area completely, expanding your minimap as large as you like, and taking a screenshot (ctrl-p). You can even use paint to make marks on such maps. If you are even lazier, do a search for "Dorim's map shop" and you can find the maps to most of the wilderness zones, as well as a few quests. The DDOwiki has a bunch of maps as well, but is not functioning last I checked.

    I love finding old threads.

So after all these years I find myself getting annoyed with entering a dungeon I've run probably 40 or more times and the map is like I've never been there before.

Excuse me if the compendium is able to know if I've run, and completed, a quest but the dungeon can't. 1 line of code. If character has received favor for this dungeon then show them the **** map.

    That is all.

Closing as /necro. People are correct that cleared map information information is stored on the character, so allowing it to be permanently visible would lead to database issues.
