Default Help needed with customization survey

    Hi All,
We are conducting a survey about customization and its effect on player motivation and enjoyment. This survey is conducted entirely for academic research purposes, and it is not affiliated with Turbine. If you would like to fill out the survey please click the link provided below. Also, there is more information and a consent form that you can read before you start to fill out the survey.

    http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DDO

Thanks very much for your time,
    Sonam Adinolf + Selen Turkay

p.s. I read the forum rules, and I'm almost 100% sure this follows them, since we're not selling anything and we don't work for any corporation. If you have any comments, feel free to post them here. We'll be checking back here regularly for a while.

I started to complete the survey but I hit all the questions about "main character" and stopped. I don't have a "main" and I think many DDO players are the same if they haved been here very long. Most of us have lots of chars we play on a regular basis, that "main" concept really doesn't apply here to anyone but new players.

Thanks for pointing that out, but we did say in parentheses "or the character you play the most". If its that close... just pick one.

Very few players with Mains in ddo.

Level ranges are wrong, levels here go from 1-20, not 1-60

Ok, went back...noticed no FvS on the list, several non DDO classes, levels above 20. You've obviously copied this from another game but it still needs some work if you expect any useful data in terms of class/levels in DDO.

Whoah. Indeed we are running both DDO and Lotro at the moment. I must have messed up when I was copy pasting and copied over the correct copies of the question. Or maybe I got confused. I play or have played WoW, CoX, Lotro, DDO, and Eve and Urban Dead... Suffice to say it sometimes gets confusing.

    We have corrected the questions.

Thanks alot for the quick feedback.

Made one more pass, gave up.

You still have classes that don't belong.

Questions are redundant (asking the EXACT same quesiton the EXACT same way 3 times is annoying and not good survey structure) and vague (friend, friend you have met in game, friend you met previously are all options in one question, how does option 1 not automatically include both 2 & 3?)

You need to look at this survey and restart it. There is no way a University prof will accept this survey as valid/meaningful given the poor structure.

    Thank you. Corrected all classes.
Questions are chosen to be this way on purpose, but again, appreciate your feedback.

Really? Because when I took courses at University on survey theory the first thing they tell you is NOT to do that. You ask the same question in different ways to detect answer drift and random responses. Asking the same question on two pages and asking confusing questions reduces the validity of your survey. But if that's what your prof is teaching then go with it I guess.

Edit: Ah, I just noticed you are in teachers college. If your prof is a teacher and not someone with a social science, applied science, or business Masters/PhD then they might be satisfied with this type of survey that you would need to teach elementary and high school students to give.

Part of the problem is that we are trying to investigate several distinct and specific aspects of game play. Enjoyment while you play, engagement to keep playing, and motivation to return to play. They may sound quite similar when you ask about them, but they're not the same thing. How often have you played some game(or watched some movie), and not really been enjoying it, yet been unable to stop playing(or watching)?

These distinctions are often unclear to people when we ask them in surveys, rather than in person. That's part of the reason some questions have pieces bolded, for emphasis.

I hope that clears some things up.

First of all, thanks to everyone who's filled out the survey so far. There haven't been as many responses as we'd hoped, given our experience doing surveys with some other MMO's. Still, we have enough to do some statistical analysis.

We'll let the survey run till the end of the week before we start our analysis. If you have not filled it out, and want to, now is the time to do it.

    Thanks for your time.

    Hi all,

Thank you so much for you help so far - both for filling out the survey and for giving me feedback on it. Our research cannot happen without your help. Since we didn't quite have enough responses to run all the analysis we wanted to run, we have extended the date that we will be collecting data until February 7th (including Feb 7th). We appreciate your help if you have 15 minutes or so to spare to fill out the survey. We define customization quite broadly, but would like to hear how others think about customization in games....

    Thanks again!

So, day after tomorrow is the last day of data collection. We could still use another 10 responses. I won't be online tomorrow, so thanks in advance to all the people who have already helped us, and to anyone who does so in the next day.

    Cheers
