Default Does anyone RP? - Voice vs Text - Voice Modulators

    Oi mates...

Sort of a multi-segmented post.. I'd like to put this in the General forum, but to be honest I'm really only interested in Thelanis at the moment, so here goes.

I'm discovering that basically NO one role plays, at least I have yet to see one in the short 3 months I've been on Thelanis.

It's a little disappointing, RP can add volumes to a game of this type.

Having said that, I understand why people don't. Often it's awkward, and it can be unnatural and forced to try to RP something that can otherwise be expressed matter-of-factly.

Voice chat can really put a damper on RP, as it's hard to roleplay a petite female halfling, when you're a rather large, deep voice man.. or vica versa for that matter. (what ever floats your boat).

While voice chat is a very usefull tool, it takes away from the immersion of the 'fantasy' of this game. People talking non-chalently to each other while a frenzied battle is taking place.. no emotion, no zeal, just blah blah blah..

Again, I understand why.. for many this type of game can be a social thing, or for whatever reason people may have.

Last evening I discovered a voice modulation program (there are several out there, google), that changed my voice to sound somewhere between a pre-teen boy, or a small woman. (Qynk is a female halfling rogue). There was a setting for 'wee folk' but it was too much, and nearly unintelligible.

I thought it was interesting, and gave it a go, going almost over-the-top with my RP over voice. I tried to make it clear, via text, what I was doing, that I was using voice modulation, and for everyone to let me know if I was annoying or not.

It was creepy to hear this soft, high pitched voice shout 'Stab! Stab! Stab!', and 'Let me kill it quick, boss!', etc.. I thought it was pretty clever, and wish others were joining in.

Well, it received mixed reviews, at best.

This is getting too long, I've probably lost a few already. But does anyone else actually Role Play? Over voice, text? Anyone else use voice modulation? Would you find it annoying?

Well I'm not one to RP a female so I cant really say much on that =)

But I do Moderate RP Via Text and Voice depending on how I feel about the party. This habit also carried over to a MMO I played a few weeks ago called Darkfall Online, What was funny is when me and my clan would go out looking for a fight and would find one someone would say "Hey Teilean say some of that RP stuff".

But I do think the Voice part does put a hamper on things at times, its very situational.

    Hey!

Qynk is somewhat of a tomboy... and prefers females.

    Qynk also likes to stab.

There are two RP guilds on Thelanis, namely:

Order of the Sword and Rose and,

The Fellowship of the Golden Night.

Both have webpages on Guildportal so you may want to google them to get their contact information. Alternatively flag one down in game on Thelanis, but you better do it in character

    Cheers

Roleplaying is alive and well on Thelanis, although I don't know of many who RP over voice, and there are far more than two RP (or at least RP-friendly) guilds on the server.

I could try to remember them all, but your best bet is to just show up in the Phoenix Tavern on a Thursday evening - you'll find members of various different guilds as well as unguilded roleplayers. Or contact a member of one of the guilds mentioned above, and I'm sure they'll be able to point you toward some roleplayers.

Oh, and out of character queries are fine... so long as it's clear they're OOC... ;-)

*Steps forward from the crowd bowing before the halfling lady.* Hello. I am Nklos Widefoot of Jorasco, ambassador of the Fellowship of the Golden Night, and friend of many in the role play alliance. There are people around who share interests with you often, we just are often unnoticed. Thursday evenings in the Phoenix around maybe eight bell (Eight o'clock easter, maybe? No fixed start or end time) you will fin a lot of us, or look for me personally. If you send an Orien post to me, or my friends, hold on, I'll scribble them down for you. Any of them can answer your questions.

((Send tells to Nklos, Drosil, Belashyra, Stonebow, Spooony, Nephilina, Dagnis, Ubrrdrr, or Galifrey. They are the characters you will most likely catch me on.))

I've been in some groups where a person or two had voice modulators. A couple were pretty much roleplaying the whole time, although, other than some medieval flavor words and sayings, not bogging down the chat with "serious" roleplaying. You know, like if I was roleplaying a fantasy guy, instead of saying, "I'm going after that bad guy over there," I might say, "I will now smite that foul beast with my holy blade!" You know, over-the-top.

I think, overall, mixing it up works well. If you try to stay in-character the whole time in a group that's not really into it, you're in the wrong group or you need to talk like a normal person when needed. Kind of like that guy who posts around here who stays in his roleplaying barbarian or whatever character the entire time in posts and talks about himself in third-person. There's a line between fun/entertaining and "overboard/annoying."

Anyway, the main voice mod guys I've played with have mainly just cranked up the echo and "booming"-ness to have a more "grand-sounding" voice. It's fun for awhile, but thankfully they usually knew when to turn it off and speak like a normal person. Otherwise, it's like if a person you know constantly jokes all the time and can never seem to have a serious conversation. You'll probably find yourself not talking to that person as much as time goes on.

I joined a random Gwylans pug a couple of years ago with a guy who was RPing 100% once the quest started (he warned us). I almost died laughing when he would talk about how his "war wounds were wearing him down" or thank me and say he felt much better after a heal. Then he'd run off to "cleave 'tween" something, and tell tales of our battles after each major encounter.

I was dying with laughter, and couldn't help but get in on the action a bit. One of the most fun runs I've ever been in. Never saw the dude again, wish he'd stuck around.

So what voice changer software is good? It's weird hearing my voice coming out of my tough male Dwarf, lol!
Please split the class forums into REAL subcategories this is a jumbled mess.

    I've played with a few.

Im not sure of the forum rules regarding the promotion of software... but if you google Voice Changer it will bring up a few options.

It can be a little tricky to set up.

My guild is kinda RP light... We're all RL Friends that PnP alot. The reason why we use DDO is everyone's schedules are incompatible with tabletop right now, and some of them are currently in other country's.

though in voice chat there is a lot of table talk cause we play tactically like we would sitting around the table. We have fun with our Bios and most of our "In Character" talk is actually in guild or party channel with emotes.

Though Voice modulation sounds like a neat idea. There's been a few good chuckles in PUGs when I voice in with my female toon and my defiantly guy voice. (And my Falsetto is even funnier)
