I actually consider myself very lawful neutral (and my Facebook quizes say so so it must be true). However, when/if you ever make your own video game, feel free to set the rules (or lack thereof) however you would like.

I equated it to stealing because you basically said - they accidentally did something or didn't do something. I know it's not intended (hence why it's an exploit) but I think I should be able to do what was not intended until they can muster the manpower to fix it. "Video game cheats" - i.e. codes that you can enter (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, start for all the old timers) ARE intentional. Exploits by definition are UNINTENTIONAL. If they are planning to fix them, they are obviously not intentional because if they were intentional they would not need to fix them. Exploits exist by accident (leaving the door unlocked) and using exploits is against the rules of the game (as is stealing in real life). You should not be permitted to violate the rules (i.e. stealing your neighbor's TV) when you know you are doing wrong, or reasonably should know you are doing wrong, until they can remedy it. It's not the way society works and the game is well within its rights to prohibit it. It is, after all, their game.

A big difference between exploits in a MMORPG and intentional cheat codes in a console video game is a matter of scale. Intentional cheats in a console game affect you only. Exploits in a MMORPG affect many players. With an ever-changing game with many players, unintended things will arise. In a single shot console game it is far less likely.

this game is actually no exception. there are intentional oversights that allow us to profit.
why do you think it's like stealing?
You point is valid, in single player games very often cheats are put in to increase the longivity of the game. Really, you can only play mario bros so many times b4 you just wanna skip a few worlds, only play your favorites and then go to the last world.

The problem comes when you make a game multi-player. Now it becomes a question of ethics, if I play 10 hrs and you play 10 hrs we should both end up in the same place, unless you are much better than me or vice-versa.

    The difference is multi-player:

    - cards
    - monopoly
    - chess/ checkers
    - sports in general
    - call of duty

Anything you play with or against other real people discourages cheating because its not a fair test of ability if you can ignore the rules which I have to follow.

Its unethical and some would cheat and then say to others "hey look how much better than you I am" when in truth you used a cheat to do what I cannot.

Why would anyone play a game honestly, when someone else can hit a button and have everything?
For single player this is not an issue.

I doubt the "oversights" in this game are intentional, but I cannot prove it. It equates to stealing only in the sense that it is just as wrong as lying or stealing.

you know what the exploits have been. a few of them are all too obvious especially as how they related to old exploits.

would a detailed list of what is an exploit discourage more people than it encourages to try it?

Who can say, its up to the individual to decide...... best to error on the side of caution.

Now for a vague list or guideline as to what is and is not an exploit, we have that in triplicate.

To the OP, as stated by several, yes you can be banned for exploiting. There are grey areas where Turbine is usually not too heavy handed. Most bannings have resulted from blatant exploits such as you talk to an NPC and are suddenly awarded 1K XP. Talking to him again, gives you another 1K XP, and so on. Well, after talking to the guy 1800 times, you are suddenly level 20, the first day a new server opens. Don't look surprised when you can't log in the next time.

On the other hand, many tactics have fallen on the fence of, is it an exploit or is it just being creative. Typically if the tactic is decided to be an exploit by the devs, it is simply corrected in the next update or sooner than that, such as using grease in the Titan raid.

I am still wondering why Whisperdoom was shut down. If anyone knows, hit me with a PM please

Kinda reminds me of Denzel's character in Philadelphia.

Joe Miller (Denzel): Explain this to me like I'm a six year old, okay? The entire street is clear except for one small area under construction, with a huge hole that is clearly marked and blocked off, and you decide you must cross the street at this spot and this spot only. You fall into the hole and you want to sue the city for negligence? ...

Client: Yeah. Do I have a case?

Joe Miller: Of course you have a case!

Would I do it? Frankly its up to you. If you want to, go ahead. Just don't get too close to the fire, or else you'll burn yourself. I HIGHLY recommend you do not tell anyone or test in public any glitches you find. Yes, I know I sound a bit evil with what I say, but you know what? We play games to have fun. This game is no exception. If you find something that gives you a superior advantage, use it, hide it and have fun! Smite me all you want for me saying this, Tolero, but I will wipe my rear end in the bathroom with your Code of Conduct paper copy!(Hmmm, thats not a bad idea actually, I should make toliet paper that has DDO:EU's code of conduct on it, just for lol's. And maybe their terms and conditions.)

By the way if you ever talk to a GM tell them my mother has better customer service than Turbine. And for Turbine to hire more employees in Customer Service. Oh, and tell them I said hi welcome.

Don't like my criminal law hypo? Try this one:

You are playing at the featured table at the World Series of Poker. You look around and realize that the reflection from the little glass plate they use to show the cameras your cards for TV purposes allows you to glimpse the opponent next to you's cards when he looks at them initially. There is a rule in the WSOP that says "no cheating". You are caught looking at the neighbor's cards or it becomes obvious you can see them (since your actions give it away or the results do). Good luck telling them you have the right to do that when they ban you from the WSOP and take your winnings/chips away. They have the right to set the terms by which people will play their game. So does Turbine.

There needs to be some existence of a system that keeps players halfway up to date on an exploit so they don't walk into it blindly. Even if most suspect its an exploit, your still going to have the few that are genuinely ignorant to the fact imo.

For the most part, if you are playing the game as intended, you won't ever exploit; in general, you have to go out of your way to do so.
